My First Day in Braces

experiences of ArchWired readers

 Kerry from London, UK

I'm 32 and have just returned from a trip to my orthodontist to have braces fitted on my bottom teeth. I've had my top ones on for about 6 months now (yay - getting there!)

I'm actually having them done at a training hospital in London so the lady I'm seeing is a qualified dentist and a trainee orthodontist. She is brilliant though, really patient and calm and I trust her 100%!

It took me months before I plucked up the courage to go and see them. And now, I am SO glad I did ! Some days I feel very self-conscious and as I'm still single, it's not exactly an attraction for the opposite sex! But I have no regrets at all and I'm at the stage where I don't care what other people think. Anyway - it's not that bad - most people will comment on them once and then forget about them. Which is what I've done really - forgotten about them!

Except today I'm in real pain again as my bottom braces are brand new and are rubbing so much. I had mashed potato for supper and will probably have soup for the next few days at work.

It is so worth it, though! My mouth and teeth have changed so much in the last 6 months and I'm so glad I took the plunge! If anyone's reading this and is undecided - please, go for it, don't wait! You will be so happy with the progress. Good luck !
