My First Day in Braces

experiences of ArchWired readers

Despite the fact that I am actually about 2 1/2 months into treatment with my orthodontic braces, I can remember the first couple of days of treatment as if it were 2 1/2 hours ago.

Let me start off by saying that I knew what I was getting myself into way before I stepped foot into the orthodontic office. I was well prepared and excited to embark on a journey that will forever change my life (It already has). This is the only way that I can look at it because I am so motivated in many areas of my life; that this is just another mountain to climb.

Yes, all the stories are true of how the soft food diet quickly becomes your friend and companion. It's quite wild, but it is a good thing for those who want to improve their self image. Braces force you to be disciplined as to what you put into your body thus changing your appearance day by day. Not even Dr. Atkins can beat that! Aside from the obvious aches and pains, I found that my excitement from the pending outcome of this treatment overrode any of the negatives about it. You will go through the soreness, the public self consciousness, and the occasional thought of "What have I done", but every 2 or 3 days that you look into your mouth you will be so glad that you've done what you've done.

It's a great treatment for great people who want better themselves before they can better the lives of others in their own ways. Just let the anxiety pass and take a deeeeep breath. LIFE IS YOURS, so let the sun shine in with a greeaaat BIG SMILE :)
