It's been 13 days since my extractions of 7 teeth. My surgeon told me the stitches were supposed to dissolve in 3-10 days, however most of them are still in there. Has anyone else had a situation where the stitches did not fall out? I could probably go back to the office and see what they say, but I would rather not take more time off work. One of them has ort of fallen out and is dangling from the roof of my mouth - it's quite irritating! I even trimmed it but it's still poking away. [/i]

MrsF I recommend you give there office a call and seek advice.

If they have to remove them, you will need to go in, or they may suggest waiting a few more days to see if more break down.

Good luck!

I had trouble with mine following my jaw surgery. Some fell out in the "predicted" timeframe, but others got long and dangly, necessitating temporary measures by me (clipping) and removal by my OS. The last few were less trouble and eventually fell out on their own.

When I had my impacted wisdoms out 20 yrs or so ago I had trouble with so-called dissolvable stitches. This was probably the wrong thing to do but I just kept on fiddling with them until eventually I managed to pull them out

The stitches dissolve as they are broken down by the body naturally. Absorbable sutures are usually mad of collagen or silk. If the sutures are placed in such a way that they are not thoroughly in contact with tissue it is quite possible that they will not be broken down and will linger. If that happens they simply need to be snipped and removed like a traditional non-absorbable suture. You can either live with it and give it more time or call your OS to have them removed.

Good Luck,
Rory
