Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum...... I originally had ALFs as part of a functional dentistry programme in my 20s. Now in my 30s, I'm 3 months in to another set of ALFs, following some regression and whacking my nose on a door! Last month, one of the acrylic pads on the top applicance began to embed itself in to the roof of my mouth, so it came out for 8 days to let the resulting ulcer heal. It was still tender when it went back in, but seems to be ok (and has been checked by my dentist). However, I've noticed that the roof of my mouth on the right hand side feels sore pretty much all the time, but, there doesn't seem to be any change in colour, or any apparent reason for it (it doesn't seem to be related to the pad either, although that does get a little tender around it on and off). The only thing I have noticed is a little, hard, 'spot' under the membrane, which feels sore. I will ask my dentist about it when I next see him, and am using salt water mouth rinses, but just wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience? Any advice gratefully received! Thank you.

Hey Alf! Welcome!

So, what is ALF? I tried to find it online, and I still don't know...

Please share--I am very curious! Thanks!

Hi Klobird!

An ALF is an 'advanced lightwire functional' appliance, first used in the 1980s. It's used not only to straighten the teeth, but to align jaw and skull bones. I've got upper and lower ALFs, and am having osteopathy alongisde it (there are a few hits on google for ALF, but they can be a bit hard to find!). (-:
