Hi everyone,

I have gummy smile due to vertical maxillary excess, and my orthodontist plans to use TADs to intrude my upper jaw. However, I have just seen a Youtube video where a virtual VME patient is treated with a maxillary impaction surgery (you can watch it by typing "Maxillary Impaction Surgery - Vertical Maxillary Excess" into Youtube search). My question is:

In the clip, we can see the maxillary impaction surgery causes the mandible to rotate upwards, resulting in reduced facial height. Can maxillary intrusion by TADs produce the same effect? I have Long Face Syndrome, so if TADs can reduce my facial height, it would be a big plus.

Thanks.

How old are you? I believe if you've stopped growing you can only intrude teeth into the jaw, but not the jaw itself. Doing so does decrease the vertical dimension, but not as much as surgery, and it doesn't look good. That type of tooth intrusion shortens the teeth and actually mimics a collapsed bite. I'm currently in TADs and my ortho tried this on me. Needless to say I am now exploring surgery. I've stopped growing. If you haven't it might be different.
