A Big HI to all,

Let me introduce myself. I am new memer to this forum. I am 26 and residing in India. I am undergoing orhodontic treatment for my teeth which are crowded.

Before the treatment began I had lower 2nd insisors both on left and right litte inside i.e behind the 1st insisors. Also I had little misallignment of my upper right 1st insisor. I had full 32 teeth before treatment began and one of my 3rd molar (left lower) had not come out fully straight and is tilted (bending foward).

As directed by the orthodontist, as there was crowding in my teeth and as i have a small jaw, all my 1st pre molars were extracted to create space for proper allignment of my teeth (mainly lower insisors) The no. of my teeth thus reduced to 28.

It has been almost 6 month since I got my braces on and have notices huge difference in my teeth from before. upper and lower incisors are now in line. But the gap b/w my upper canines and 2nd premolar has not yet got bridged.

As I have discussed before that one of my lower molars is tilted, so my orthodontis has now directed to get all my 3rd premolars removed so as to have even better spacing.

I am a bit concerned about this as firstly my tooth count will decrease further from 28 to 24 and secondly i might have trouble chewing.

Could any expert on orthodontics please guide me if I should go for the extaction (of molars)

Many thanks in advance.
Chromus

Hi :) It is pretty standard of orthodontists to pull out 2nd premolars to fix the crowding. Your orthodontist asked you to take you your wisdom teeth which will stop your teeth from recrowding once your brace come off. If you leave in those last molars you can run the risk of even constant infections. I ad my last molars (wisdom teeth) taken out and so glad I did. As for the pre molar spaces from he teeth you have already extracted they usually close those spaces at the end of treatment, don't worry. Your bite will be perfect in the end you will see. Do not worry.

You should extract wisdom teeth but not premolars. Extracting premolars will change your face for the worse unless you have a class I skeleton and major crowding. Your mouth will become smaller, smile narrow, etc. Yes, your teeth will be straight, but at the expense of the face. Making small jaws smaller by removing teeth--does that make logical sense to you?

I agreewith the last comment. I don't think it's right that orthodontists should pull out perfectly healthy teeth for no reason when there are many other options. It's really sad. :( My ortho said she doesnt believe in pulling premolars
