Lower Bonded Retainer....questions!

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Lower Bonded Retainer....questions!

#1 Post by appygirl82 »

I just got my braces off yesterday after 26 months! Got my retainers today, both upper and lower clear plastic removable ones. I asked if I could get a lower bonded one so that I only have to deal with one removable one (at night only).

My questions are....

I'm seeing all sorts of post where people are talking about how terrible they are ( bonded ones). Are they really that bad? I understand it probably takes a few days to adjust to just like having braces was....but will I get used to it? Should I just stick with my lower removable one? I'm freaked out

Also, with the bonded ones, they only usually are behind the front teeth, not the molars. How are the molars going to stay straight if there is nothing holding them in place. The clear ones I have cover all teeth so I could see how they keep everything straight....with bonded they only are attached to a few....

Help me out here! :D

Basically a bonded retainer is to help keep the front six teeth that are susceptable to moving whereas the molars have and premolars have less chance of unwanted movement. I would say go for it though its going to stink really bad when it comes to flossing it will be like braces all over again where they say you NEED to floss.

I'm toying with copying and pasting one of my past posts on this subject.

Before I do though, I'd highly recommend you stick with what you have and not go permanent unless maybe you wear a removable at night as well.

Maybe it was just my dumb-luck, aw heck, here's my previous post:
_______________
This is always the subject that sets me off since I had a woeful experience with a lower (supposedly) permanent bonded retainer. This was my experience, others may have been luckier, so I'll try not to vent too much.

My lower permanent (grrr) came partially unbonded and I did not notice since teeth move slow and it was in the centre. We're not talking crazy bad, but enough relapse on the bottom where I started having some jaw and overbite issues. I see many folks here have bonded/permanent along with essix or even a hawley. I was thrilled to only have to deal with the top hawley, because retainers are a pain, but in the end it was bad. I actually started with hawleys on top and bottom but a friend had a permenent and it seemed like a cool thing to ask for.

I always only half-joked that I'd rather have braces again than deal with retainers... and if there's a positive in this deal, I got my wish.

So after all that, if you go permanent, watch it like a hawk, follow-up now and then with your ortho (I moved way far from where I completed treatment) or see about a combo if your ortho wants to go permanent.

I'd say that's about $.01 worth since I'm nowhere near a pro.

Have a delightful day/night, whatever it is and SMILE!

I agree my friend's broke off too. That is a high risk it comes unbonded so yeah I would def stick to the removeables because say you got the permanent, and they make your retainer time shorter than should oit be just removables. And one day it breaks, then you're in big trouble.

Hey appygirl82, congrats on getting debanded! Regarding your question, here's my experience: I got debanded about 10 months ago and was given top/bottom bonded retainers in ADDITION to Hawley/Essix retainers. Although they don't bother me, I must admit I'm not a big fan of the bonded retainers. Food, especially bread, frequently gets caught in them and only brushing can dislodge it. I also have to use threader floss/floss threaders every night to floss...kind of a pain. I wear the removable retainers at night.

So yes, you could definitely adjust to them, but as others have said, you would probably need to wear removable retainers at night.
