Hey Ebony sorry you had a tough start and are having it rough, keep at it just think how AMAZING and PERFECT your mouth will be you wull be able to chew better, smile more, and even peak better. I have noticed a huge speech imporvement with my braces and I am having a tough time with mine as well, mostly because I am super nervous about having them fears of breaking stuff and such. But we can get through this together. :) Everytime I go to an appointment it is always so shocking to me what she does to me. I mean I researched braces and orthodontics in and out and there is a uniformed way of doing things, but my orthodontist is all rushing it, I know in the end I shouldn't be worried or overwhelmed about all of this because I want to see the end result as soon as possible and I konw she's doing what she's been trained to do and ive seen her end results, but still, it somehow bothers me that everything gets shoved on me and I am scared to question her authority since she's doing my braces out of courtesy. Do you know what I mean. Like Im only in braces for 6 months and I am already in the stiff rectancular wire.

Got a desperate call from a dentist on Tuesday who needed an assistant desperately since his only assistant is going to be sick for a very long time and it all happen so fast. He had been working 1,5 week without assistant and his daughter had been helping him.
Not only have I been working double shifts this week (since I had my last week at my old job too) but I have been seeing extractions, root canals and everything this week without a bit of fear. Have not had the time to think on my ortho appointment at all, have been too tired to even answer e-mails when I arrive home at night. It was only this week with double shifts, next week I’m only going to work as a dental assistant. This dentist is sharing his clinic with an ortho so I might get use to all the “ortho stuff” while working there, that might be a good thing. It might be my ticket to get over this fear  .

My ortho mentioned that we were going to talk about some of the things I mentioned in my e-mail so I’m a bit nervous about that. I’m not good at talking when I’m nervous. He is so kind, he tends to sit down with me when we are having these talks but I still have problems to open up. So we’ll see how this goes

BSS: Talk to your ortho. She might be used to work very fast and do things as fast as possible. If you don’t feel comfortable with it, talk to her. You don’t question her work, I ask my ortho all kinds of questions. He even encourages me to write down questions that I might get between appointments and bring them with me to my appointments.
Your ortho might like it if you take an interest in your treatment. Don't know if you ortho can give you some private time with her to talk?

Wow!!! You just jumped into the new job--and so fast!!! I'm really glad that you're mind has been occupied. Maybe if you write down what you want to say to the ortho, and take that note card with you (I do it all the time with my dentist) it won't be as difficult...( :?: )

I've been thinking about you and your appointment on Monday--good luck!

Hey that is sooooooo awesome about the new job, congrats. :jump: :jump: :jump:

You are so lucky I wish I could work at a dental office. When I go away to college I will probably work at the school but I really want to stay in retail.

That is true, I mean I know she is amazing at what she does but its kind of worries me, like I am not used to that at all. Im used to slow orthodontists who take their jolly old time prolonging the agony. Kids in braces for 3.5-5 years. And from everyone that has been to my ortho's office they've said 4-5 years in braces. So I figured we would have plenty of time to take it slow. I mean now she's got me in the rectangle square harder wires and only on the bottom whereas we're supposed to be fixing an overbite not underbite, and they hurt a bit much :-(( I know she's just doing her thing, but I feel maybe we shouldn't be going this fast, its all overwhelming me, I dont know if it is because I have a lot on my shoulders what with being accepted to Pre Med and kee on going to my new school a lot and freaking out about student loans :( I don't want to take them out but have no choice; and what with the mid term exams and her rushing into everything all at once I feel like we should take a chill pill. aif that makes any sense. I mean I like wearing the elastics all the time but I feel like we're goig too fast in the wrong area. I mean I have been in the same size and place elastics since December 1, 2011 that I am now. I would have figured she'd give me stronger ones by now and leave the wires alone.

Student loans suck!!! I have no nicer words to describe them.. I just got 0.18 square wires top and bottom after just 5 months. They did not hurt though, but I did need a poking wire clipped yesterday.

Ebony, thats great about a job as a dental assistant. I hope it helps you with your dental fears. Someone like you must be such a great asset in terms of halping calm other patients with dental phobia's and anxieties. Hopefully you can use your own issues to help others :)

Survived yet another ortho visit!

Woke up this morning with anxiety because of this appointment but luckily I had very much to do at work and looking at peoples teeth all day made little time to think on my own appointment.

So what did we do with my braces today? Nothing  I was in there for an hour and we did absolutely nothing with my braces, which I’m glad for. No new power chain or new arch wire!
We did have a chat about my dental fear and he tried to teach me a bit about orthodontic. He explained that if I wanted to I could spend a little time on his clinic watching what he does and get used to everything but it tends to be very hectic. He can see 4-5 patients in one hour, he won’t have the time to explain everything he does to me but I was welcome if I wanted. Thanked him for the offer but I don’t think I can do that yet, maybe later in my treatment.
He asked if I wanted to see if my teeth have moved and if the arch wire was still active, he did not need to see it if I did not want to. We could just have a chat today if I did not feel like “opening my mouth”.

When I got into the chair he found a mirror and started to explain everything as always. He found my impressions to let me see how my teeth looked like before braces and today, and wow! The canine has change! It was fun to see that. The arch wire was still active so he did not do anything about that one. It would be more comfortable if the first arch wire has done much of its work before putting on a .014.

Got to see all the arch wires he tend to use and could compare them with the one I have now.

What we are going to do next time, in three weeks? No new arch wire and no new power chain, yay! He just wanted to see if he could activate the tooth beside my canine that is not attached to the wire. We are taking everything slow and easy.

I still have doubt if I can do this or not, hmmm. Don't like the tought of a new arch wire.

Hey Eb--Eventually you will have a wire, or a pokey, or a chain that will cause soreness. It's exciting to me,though, because it means that things are definitely back to moving. For me, there is a long, boring time in between visits when it seems like nothing is happening because nothing aches or hurts at all. It's only those 3-4 days after an archwire change. During those days your teeth just feel tender. And Ibuprofen goes a long way in relieving that. It's achy, and it's different than a cavity toothache. Those are sharp nerve pains. I really can't tolerate cavity pain at all :!:

You will get through this--your mind is doing a real number on you. (I wish there was something I could do to fix that!!!) The whole thing is soooo worth it. Like when you got excited about your tooth moving at this last appointment. Wait until you get major movement (which doesn't take that long). Then you'll be in it to win it!!

Your orthodontist is the best!!!! I am soooo glad he is working with you!! And you must be sooo proud of yourself for getting through yet another ortho appointment!!

P.S. I have a major adjustment coming up next Monday--new archwire for sure (he already told me) and
who knows what else!! Yes, it will be sore--but I'm ready to go--I'm ready for my teeth to get going again!
And then I'm getting a massage next Tuesday!! Yippeee!

Later gator!!!!

Hey Ebony, that is AMAZING.And I though my orthodontist was awesome. Yours is secretly cooler. shh dont tell mine LOL

I would give anything to watch my orthodontist for a day and see what she does. That would make me soo happy if I could.

Oh they look great Ebony! I am on day three of braces now and already noticing very subtle changes in my VERY wonky teeth! I can't wait until I am as far along as you! :)
