BRACING MYSELF FOR A BETTER SMILE ACROSS THE MILE

#1 Post by MadSpinner »

Day 0:I have been thinking of this for years. Ever since college, I dreamed of having braces, but not putting in mind that it is for dental purposes. But I never had the guts to tell my mother about having braces because I know we could never afford having one for me since we do not have a reliable source of income (thanks to my scholarship, I was able to pursue college). Didn't really know until last time that my mother really wanted me to have braces. It's just that she doesn't want me to feel pain along my college days (as what other students complain when they had their braces).

Now it is official. Tomorrow I will be having them. But I really am nervous.

May God bless me on my journey with braces on tomorrow.

Myths to be proved: Though I know that these myths have already been answered in some topics here, I wish to really prove them right or wrong to myself (you know, WYSIWYG).
  • Pronunciations will be affected with braces on (lisping or what).
  • Drooling most of the time
  • Spitting (sometimes? or most?)
  • Pain that will not make me sleep comfortably on the next few days with braces on.
  • Sympathetic persons around after they see you with braces on.
  • Better self-esteem

Day 1: It was yesterday. When the molar bands were removed, I smelled a very bad scent in my mouth. Haha! Though I brush my teeth, I really do not use mouthwash after. It took two hours for my dentist to install my braces for my upper teeth. All the things I have read about the installation of braces were true (well certainly it is! The same process is done worldwide): my teeth was cleaned up, then it was dried up using a blue paste, the hardware was installed, then that's it! I feel pressure on my canine (the term I forgot to mean my fangs haha!) which was not in its position, as well as my two front teeth which was inward. That's when I realized what the dentist meant when she said she'd put the "stones" on my front teeth lower than usual to pull it up in front.

The first day for me is alright, except for my struggles when eating my food, and my sleep. Food? Well, I need to break them down into pieces, as in making me function like a stomach first since I need to grind them (haha! what a term) before I swallow. After eating, my system unconsciously tells me to clean up my metal mouth because I can really feel the tiny bits of food stuck on my braces. For my sleep, I intermittently wake up, not because of pain, but because of an unknown reason. Maybe it is because of the newly installed hardware in my mouth, and my body is still adjusting with them on for about 2 years.

No pain for now, but I really hope I can say forever. Haha!

Will post pictures soon.

Myths to be proved:
  • [s]Pronunciations will be affected with braces on (lisping or what).[/s] So far, my pronunciation after my braces were installed is 93% accurate. Its effect is very little in significance, or should I say subtly noticeable.
  • [s]Drooling most of the time[/s] Not all the time, but the braces will really make me drool, especially when talking.
  • [s]Spitting (sometimes? or most?)[/s] Almost spitted to my mom when we talked! But it is controllable.
  • [s]Pain that will not make me sleep comfortably on the next few days with braces on.[/s] It is not pain for me. It may be my body adjusting to the hardware installed in my mouth. I really hope pain will not haunt me in my sleep.
  • Sympathetic persons around after they see you with braces on. (Yet to be busted today.)

Congratulations. You are on your way to your dream smile. Hopefully you are not too uncomfortable.
As each day passes I'm getting closer and closer to my dream smile.

Thanks Lovelyteeth. So far, I'm good with my braces.

Day 2: The braces make my lips uncomfortable. This must be the start of the agony. (yikes!) My lips are always dry, and it is difficult to eat. It feels like I eat a little but I'm full, probably due to my own training to myself when I was on diet before. I can sleep well now, and have brushed my teeth appropriately, thanks to youtube. There's no pain when standby, but it's awfully painful when my upper teeth, especially the front teeth clash with my lower teeth.

I hope everything turns out right.

P.S. No sympathetic persons. Just curious. Haha!

Oh I know what you mean about top teeth bumping bottoms. My bite was OK pre braces and I miss the feeling of being able to put my teeth together. I have to be do careful as a couple of top brackets clash with bottoms grrrrrrr. Hopefully when they straighten it will be better.
As each day passes I'm getting closer and closer to my dream smile.

How fool I was when I absentmindedly put my upper and lower front teeth together just as I read your post. It hurts!
