Before pictures....again

#1 Post by Emmauk »

Dear all

I thought its about time i uploaded some photos of my before picture (its been over a year already) just so that its on file.

The pictures are taken with my bite shut!!! wow - didnt realise it was THAT bad. I am due to have 5 extractions on 11 Oct, brace fitted first week of Nov then after 18-24months double jaw surgery.

I am quite concerned about how i will look post surgery (isnt everyone). If your case was similar to mine how did you like the new you?, feel free to add any comments/questions.

Hi Emma,

Can't help you at the moment I'm afraid as I'm still pre-op myself and have exactly the same questions - we're in a similar position I think as I have anterior open bite with surgery next year.

Anyway, I did mention some concerns about how my appearance will change to the ortho this morning and she said that according to my notes they don't want to change my profile or widen my top arch surgically so the aesthetics won't be dramatic. She said that the orthodontics are done on a 'rough' (!) plan of action and that nearer the surgery date the surgeon would give much more accurate measurements of exactly how much they will move my jaws and at that stage would have a better idea of how my appearance will alter. So assuming you are NHS too, I would say just keep asking questions at every appointment because it's the only way of finding out exactly what is in your notes.

Every time I have a wobble I just remind myself that even if my new appearance isn't quite how I'd expect/choose it to be then at least my mouth will close, my teeth will function, and this was never meant to be a cosmetic operation. That said, if I come out of surgery looking like some kind of giant-jawed freak with a witch's chin I will be booking a cosemtic procedure ASAP!!

Im probably similar to you then in that if i put my bottom jaw forward it just looks odd - witch like i guess and then i think will it look like that though?

Its hard isnt it.

I am too looking forward to being able to eat properly but i also want to like the new me.

Well, I had my 4 wisdoms and a premolar exracted under GA yesturday and i am surprisingly well.

Not particularly swollen and not in any real pain.

My only concern is that my clots have already gone and im worried about dry socket. I rang the hospital and they werent very helpful so i rang my regular dentist and she told me i should be on a liquid diet for 24hours then a soft diet for 48 hours ish and after the first 24 hours to rinse with salt water at least 3 times a day.

Im shocked really as when i came round after the GA i was told to eat a chicken sandwich - which i did then for dinner they gave me salmon potates and greens (I asked if i should be eating normal food and they said to), they also didnt tell me to do any rinses! I asked if i had stitches incase i needed to get them removed and i was told i had no stitches, when i got home last night and had a look around i can quite clearly see one so when i rang and asked she said not to worry it'll be disolvable.

Bit annoyed really but at the same time im glad its done and that so far, so good.

I really hope im not going to get dry socket as i have heard its awful.

Do you have any pain? The biggest sypmtom of dry socket is intense pain due to the bone and nerves being exposed. You're probably ok if you don't have much pain but if it gets worse I'd defintely go see your dentist as soon as possible.

Using a straw to drink after extractions can cause dry sockets. I don't really know what else causes them, but they are avoidable along with a lot of pain. So, don't use a straw.

I forgot - When I had my wisdom teeth out, I followed the surgeon's directions about the straw and didn't experience any dry sockets.

Thank you for that, i had already read on here not to use a straw, the hospital gave me no instructions whatsoever when they discharged me, everything i know about Wisdom extractions is information from the internet.

I still have no pain, its uncomfortable and tender but not painful i am therefore thinking so far so good!

For me it was about 4 days after getting three of my wisdoms out that i started having really bad pain in only one area. But after calling my oral surgeon they figured out i had an infection, maybe a little dry socket but really infected. It was horrible pain. Believe me when i say you would know if there was a problem. I actually had to get extra Loratab (which is pretty powerful) and another round of antibiotics before i started to not feel awful pain. If after a few days you feel fine, you shouldn't have to worry anymore.
