So I was reading something yesterday at my appointment, and of course didn't get the time to discuss it with my Ortho and wanted some opinions from my fellow Archwired Addicts. In the retention area it said "lower 3x3 wire, upper Essix" Now two things, one I do not want a permanent retainer, at all. Never, never, never. Number two, because of my two spaces for implants, I want an upper Hawley with fake teeth. I'm also not interested in having to replace an Essix retainer every year, or whatever it is. Does it sound OK for me to go in and say "I don't think so" to everything she thought she was going to do? She is my new Ortho, so we haven't really had much time to talk, especially about retention, since we're dealing with the final tweaks and the Oral Surgeon stuff. I do try to be nice, but when someone tries to push stuff on me, after I've said no, I can be a real PAIN....since people tend to think short petite girls are push-overs. So what's the best approach? Since I have to pay $800 just for removal and retainers, I may as well get what I want right?

...once again I tried to use a big girl word, and it replaced it with "complain" so I changed it to PAIN, even though I can be a real B sometimes. Geez, can't even call myself a complain

Well let me know what your ortho says when you say you do not want a permanent retainer. I have a ways to go with braces yet but I know he wants to put a permanent retainer on my bottom six and like you I really don't want one.

(Supposedly) Permanent Retainers = BAD!

After being burned by a lower permanent retainer only, I'd stay steer clear if at all possible unless coupled with an essix at night to ensure all is well.

She was not happy. Lol. But said ok...i also picked an upper hawley instead of an Essix. She didn't like that either, but lower Essix and upper hawley was all I was giving in to. I would have preferred upper and lower hawleys, which I might do a while down the road. My dentist already told me he'll replace my upper for free after I get my new crowns placed on my implants, so I'll know by then if I dislike the Essix enough to replace it as well.
Let me know what your ortho says when you refuse the permanent, I'd like to know if mine is the rudest ortho of all

Well I am scheduled to get my braces off in June but I am going to talk to him about retainers when I see him in March. Will let you know. I know he also uses Vivera retainers in addition to the bonded retainers. Will discuss this with my dentist also as I have fillings in all my bottom front teeth and will probably need work on them at some point.
