I'm finally getting braces at age 20, and I'm quite nervous at the thought of it all!

It all started when I went to my dentist and complained about one of my bottom teeth that points inward a bit too far and rubs against my tongue when I talk. He referred me to an orthodontist and as it turns out that one tooth wasn't my only problem. She pointed out to me a few other alignment issues I have, as well as discovering that I have an overbite that will damage my teeth if left untreated.

This morning I began my 24 month treatment. They put spacers between my back teeth this morning, and next Thursday I'll get my braces installed. My orthodontists said she can't put both the upper and lower brackets on right away, so I'll be getting the top ones first and approximately a month later I'll be getting the bottom ones.

The spacers are a bit uncomfortable, but there hasn't been any real pain. I took an ibuprofen right after they put in the spacers as per their recommendation, and now that it's worn off I feel mild discomfort but nothing too bad. Hopefully it won't turn into actual pain as I go to bed tonight.

Hopefully everything goes smoothly throughout the whole process!

Thanks, I have a feeling I'll need it!

Last night I woke up at 2:00 AM with my jaws and head throbbing. Took some ibuprofen and once it finally kicked in I finished what was left of my night without incident. My teeth do hurt a bit this morning, but nothing too bad. My orthodontist had said that many people find spacers to be the most uncomfortable part of getting braces. I sure hope she's right!

Spacers were the most painful part of the whole process for me (well, so far--I'm almost done!). Good luck and welcome!

So far our stories seem pretty similar. I just wanted to fix one tooth as well but it turns out I have an overbite and overjet:s. So just like you I have to have the tops placed a few months prior to the bottoms (I'll be upper braced on May 9th)
I hope the spacers aren't too bad atm but today is your brace day so it's not for much longer any way.
GOOD LUCK today! Hope it goes well :)

Yea that is similar! Fortunately the spacers didn't hurt quite as much last night, I think I may be getting used to them. I'll have the spacers until next Thursday so one week left.

Hopefully this week goes by fast so I can get going with the braces. Spacer pain seems worthless, at least with braces the pain means my teeth are being moved where they need to be going.

Hello, Acklay! I had spacers for a week-and-a-half (and have had braces for just over a week) and I had a similar experience. Spacers were aggravating and felt pointless (although I know they weren't, technically). I just wanted them out of my mouth! Braces have been an adjustment, but a less difficult one for me because I'm just happy to finally have them. (I hope I keep feeling that way!)

Good luck to you!

Good luck with your journey!! I go in 3 weeks. They are going to do my x rays, impressions and spacers all in one day. They told me to be prepared to stay at least 3 hours.

I have braces on top and bottom and will go in tomorrow for spacers for a crown that will need a bracket added to it. Ugh - but nice to hear that you didn't have too much discomfort with the spacers. Thanks for sharing!
