And they're IN!... formerly 1 Day to go!!

#1 Post by Daveyboy »

So, its almost 12 months since I first went to see an orthodontist, and now less than 24 hours until my upper lingual STbs are placed.....

A nice big steak for tea I think!! :D

I've managed to be way too busy to do any of the things I had meant to - salt water rinses.... flossing every day......eating all of my favourite foods.

I can't tell if i'm looking forward to it or not..... I think i'm looking forward to the results, so gonna keep my eye on the prize!

I've taken the day off work tomorrow so will hopefully start my blog, and upload some pics.

See ya'll!

Dave

Good luck daveyboy, only a few hours until you wake up! And BTW, you will still be able to eat steak with braces.

Sat back at home now, its been a few hours since the upper linguals were put in..... for anyone interested here's an account of the appointment. I'll keep it as short as possible. If anyone wants any more info then please don't hesitate to ask!

9:55 Went into "the chair"....... turns out this is really comfy and my lack of sleep meant I almost fell asleep before we started!

First, my ortho cleaned the teeth with "aluminium oxide" and then rinsed. This I guess is to give the teeth a super ultra clean! This was fine.

Then they put a blue gel on each tooth, and left it there for about a minute before washing it off whilst using the suction pipe thing. This is probably the worst bit........... this stuff tastes FOUL!!!! I tried to keep my tongue out of the way but it was pretty difficult.

Next she put some cement on each tooth, cured it slightly with the light, and then put 3 or 4 of the brackets in at a time. These had been held in a preformed tray, so they should sit in the right place on the tooth. The preformed tray was split into 4 sections, and so section at a time she put the whole tray on, then cured the brackets using the light, and then took the tray out, leaving the brackets!!!

Last came the back molars which were done indvidually, using the same method, but without the tray.

All of this took about 45 mins, and then they were on!! I rinsed and got a feel for them for the first time...... Uh OH!!! These felt HUGE!! However my ortho reassured me that it feels better once the wire is in, so we proceeded to do that, which took another 15mins.

And that was that...... the road has begun!! 1.5 hrs, with likely BSSO lower surgery after about 12 months.

Its now a few hours later, teeth feel fine, just a little sensitive.... Tongue is getting a battering so i've put wax on most of the brackets. Its very red, all around the edge, so hoping this doesn't get too worse. Gonna use some salt rinses and bongela after dinner tonight. Oh and the ortho gave me a covering "mould" for me to wear at night for the first couple of weeks, that things gonna be a god send!!!

Here's a before and after pic!!

After

Some of the brackets seems to be very low, i.e. as far a way from the gum as possible, and it feels like i'm biting on a couple if I bite my teeth together, i'll ask about this when I go back in in 4 weeks.

Overall my first impressions are that hopefully once my tongue gets used to these things, then it should be fine. My speech isn't too bad, yes its a bit lispy, but I reckon it should be ok in a few weeks.

Hope everyone is having a good day today, i'm taking my MINI on a racetrack tomorrow, that should take my mind of things!!

Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave, congrats on your progress. Sounds like everything is going well!

Thanks for posting the pic. I am wondering what is attached to the end of the very back bracket. It doesn't look like wax, is it something else??

Hi Eveyone,

Right, day 5 now and my tongue is still trying to adjust to these things. It feels fine when i'm eating, in fact whilst eating I can't even notice that they're in. However as the day goes on my tongue swells a little more and more so i get more and more lispy. :P

I'm more lispy with wax in, but it still feels very sharp and rough without.
Overall tho.... i'm still really pleased!! and am looking forward to my tongue adjusting to these things and settling down a little. I'm very grateful for the mouthguard my ortho gave me to sleep in, as by the morning my tongue is fine, so i'm hoping this is helping it ease into these brackets, without getting too cut up.

One problem.... my teeth have already moved so i've had to modify this mouthguard so it fits! I'm really pleased with this, and I can even see a difference already!

Cheeky Mango.. the stuff at the back is some composite that the ortho put over the end of the wire to stop it poking into the back of my tongue. Seems a good idea as I can't even notice these back brackets!

BlahBlah - congrats on the burger! I'm still unsure about biting into stuff as some of my brackets seem very low (i.e. almost on the tip of the tooth) so i'm worried about biting them off. Might try eating one with a knife and fork, however for the moment i'm taking it easy with pasta/potatoes etc.

For anyone thinking of getting linguals, although I've only just started, its not as bad as you might think... so good luck!

See ya'll!

Hi daveyboy, it is great you are so positive after 5 days!
The mouthguard and the composite must be helping a lot, I had a lot of problems with my first wire with its poky end!
I also don't risk biting in anything even after almost 4 months so don't rush with it, you can eat that burger with knife and fork as well :D
