So there I was, sitting in traffic wondering if they guy in front of me was aware that his brakelight was out. I had left just the house in time to get to the orthodonstist exactly at my scheduled time of 10:30. But by the time I found parking, I actually walked in at 10:31.

Image

Image

I was not apprehensive or nervous about the appointment. For me, it's all about having the right mindset with something like this. My smile is the only thing about me that I am ever so slightly self-conscious about. To get it fixed means that in my own mind I would be perfect. The way I've always wanted to be. I tell my friends that 'Im going Hollywood', because after I get my braces off I'll have that perfect smile for tv. They get a good chuckle out of that.

I walked in, said hello to the sweet girl at the front desk. I had talked with her quite a bit on the phone because I moved all my scheduling up between the Dentists and XRAY place, so I could get my braces faster. She worked me in almost a month ahead of my regularly scheduled time slot which was super nice of her! Good customer service is so difficult to find these days.

So there I sat, amongst other adults. Unlike my initial consultation where I came in the afternoon and was surrounded by 12-14yr olds staring me down in the waiting room, this was much more comfortable as there were people older and younger than me sitting there. Several of them were talking and I listened quietly to their conversation about pets, and their children. It was a very comfortable feeling and relaxed.

Image

Then they finally called my name and I went in the back where all the chairs are. It was quite busy as every chair was taken up. I had to wait for a chair for about 10 minutes before being led to the chair in the very corner facing a beautiful green plant. I thought 'this is THE CHAIR' that is going to change my life. I was stoked!

Image

I quickly introduced myself to the tech girl and told her that I had brought a camera to record the whole day. She was very cool about it and went over to discuss it with the doctor. He came over and was more than happy to take the pics himself to record the process. I thought their might be a problem but it was all good!

Image

I quickly glanced at the table next to me and studied all the stuff on it. The tech-girl came over and I asked questions about every item that was sitting on the table. She had a clear plastic thing with damon brackets, colored bands on a ring (I didn't get to choose from any of these), a weird looking gun that shoots out purple light, and some stuff that looked like an epoxy adhesive for the brackets. Once I got the low-down, she leaned me back in the chair we were off and running!

Image

First she gave my teeth some polish. She cleaned things up and talked about taking care of my teeth during the process. The polish will help fight staining of my teeth. After she was done, she called the doc over and I knew it was time!

He came over and we started talking. I told him let's do this and he sounded excited by my enthusiasm. The doc is very cool, laid back and so knowledgable, I have complete trust in him. From here, he started on my molars. He informed me that he would attach direct brackets to my molars instead of wrap-around bands. But, since I have some fillings back there from when I was a kid (I was so irresponsible as a child!), that he couldn't gauarantee the direct bond would stay attached when placed over a filling. Hopefully they hold tight because those bands look very uncomfortable! So he put the first four brackets on and each of them has a long protruding edge to hook bands onto). After these four, he told me to go rinse my mouth with water, and then return and we'll do the rest.

So I walked over the mirror and there I was staring at the first four pieces of metal in my mouth. That was a bit of an odd feeling. I still had no panic, no anxiety, no nervouseness. But I will say that I had a bit of a down feeling for just a second, but that quickly went away when I reminded myself that I will be 'Hollywood' after this is all over :)

Image

So I returned the chair and the doctor continued to put on the rest of the Damon 3 brackets! One by one they went from the table and into my my mouth, and I must say that it was completely painless. In between brackets, he would take some action pics of me in the chair to record the process. Some of the other tech-girls came over too and took some shots with one of them goofing off behind me. That really made me comfortable and we were all laughing. The staff was awesome. Everyone was so friendly, open and chatty, I loved it!

After about an hour or so, I had a mouth full of metal! It didn't take long for my teeth to start to feel heavy. It didn't hurt but I could tell that the inside of my lips were going to be troublesome around the lower braces that seemed very sharp! I know they aren't that sharp, but when your gums are used to rubbing up against your smooth teeth, it's sort of a rude awakening and uncomfortable feeling when they hit those brackets for the first time!

Image

After I got my braces I talked with the friendly tech-girl a little more, asking lots of questions about eating, and all that usual stuff. She explained the foods that I am not supposed to eat, how to brush properly, etc.

Then I got up from the chair and wandered into the accounting office to pay for my braces! And let me tell you, that this by far the most painful part of the process. I decided to pay up front for my braces and it set me back a whopping $5,022k! That is one hefty chunk out of my pocket at once, but I saved nearly $400 because I paid all up front. Otherwise it would have cost $5,400. I'm all about saving money when I can. :)

Once I paid, I walked out of the office and into a new chapter of my ever-changing life! I had a travel bag of goodies that they gave me, my camera, my backpack and my braces. I was stoked as it was pretty much a perfect day!

Afterwards, I was very hungry, so I drove over to In-N-Out. I ordered up a double-double plain, with some fries and a nice cold chocolate shake. Things were good at first when I started eating but then I found out just how easily food gets caught in the braces. Pretty soon I felt my gumline bulging with stuck food particles. It was a little insane trying to drive home and get some food down my throat. Seems like most of it never made it past my molars. Luckily I was heading home so I could easily clean things up once I got home.

For the rest of the evening and night, I felt totally fine but I could feel the tightening. But, on a pain level of 0-10 (zero = no pain; ten = kill me now), I was still at a zero which was nice.

For dinner, I had angel hair pasta which went well I am happy to report. I also had garlic bread and brochlli. The garlic bread took a while to eat the crust. I had to go slow and careful on that part, although it wasn't truly crusty and still had some softness to it. Immediately afterwards, I found that it now takes me much longer to floss. In fact, it's so time-consuming I now have to budget time during the day to take care of that! Hopefully I'll get faster with practice but right now I feel like a 3yr old trying to solve a rubics cube!

I am in America.

From what I can gather, the price seems to be about right for California. Some people say they had to pay more, and others are less. Either way I'm just glad I won't have any monthly payments to worry about.

Day 2 (yesterday) of my story is coming soon. Which I will say was TOTALLY OPPOSITE from Day 1!!!

Congrats on getting braced Michael.

mmm In-N-Out... now you are making me crave a double double. You are very brave for trying that as your first meal with braces. I didn't even attempt anything that complicated. Of course plain might not be that bad. I have to get mine animal style so between the grilled onions and lettuce I usually end up with a ton of leftovers in my teeth, lol.

Day 2: Firey Pits of H*ll (without shoes)

#7 Post by -Michael- »

Day 2: Firey Pits of H*ell (without shoes)

If day one could be descibed as a walk in the park, day two would be a walk in the firey pits of h*ll without shoes :D

I woke up at 4am (I always wake up at 6am). I woke up and things felt fine, but I knew there had to be some reason I randomly woke up and couldn't go back to sleep. I was thinking about lecture that day at school and how difficult it might be to talk for an hour. I was a little anxious to get to school and get the day started, so I laid there for an hour before getting up at 5am to brush my teeth and start the day.

Looking the mirror I must have still been dreaming because I half-way expected to see some movement....ROFL... After less than 24hours, I would say that was a bit more than optomistic...haha.

As I was brushing I definitely noticed a strong increase in tension on my teeth from the day before. I thought to myself, if this is all you have for me Mr. Braces, then I win....I was mistaken.

I went in the kitchen to pour my first bowl of post-braces cereal. My choice of the morning was my usual Wheat Chex. I figured I'd let them sit in the milk and get soggy for a while before chewing and things would be fine. Wrong number II of the day!

I went to bite down and completely scraped the inner part of my lower lip on my lower brackets. I chewed some more and scraped it even more and spit out the food back into the bowl (aren't you glad I don't carry the camera with all the time...haha). The pain of the scraping was unbearable, so I stopped eating after only two small bites and told myself I could go until lunch no problem, so I went and brushed again, only to find out that most of the first two bites were still in my teeth!

I got ready for school and then grabbed my toothbrush kit and laptop and bolted for school. Once there, I talked to myself all the way there to see how I would do. Hmmm.....speech is slurred and unclear and the continued scraping of my lower lips on my lower brackets was killing me. At this point I don't have a clue as to why I didn't reach for the wax! Call me Mr. Stupid for the day. So I announced to my first class that there would be no lecture today and they were to work on their projects. They seemed happy about that and so was I.

As the class went on, and I answered more and more questions, I found myself increasingly running down the hall to a water fountain that spits out water as cold as the artic. I love that water fountain now! It's my new hang-out spot between classes.

By the time second class started two hours later, I was in some serious amount of pain. Again it wasn't because of the tension on my teeth (although that was very uncofortable but not really pain), it was because of my lower lips being scraped up so badly whenever I try to talk! I was having a miserable time trying to focus on the students questions and luckily for this class, I had no lecture planned.

At lunch time, I decided that eating anything harder than water would be too much trouble so I decided to walk across campus and down to the Jamba Juice on the corner. Once there, I ordered up my favorite item, a Mango-w/ Orange Sherbert instead of Pineapple Ice Cream. I thought for sure this would be my one-way ticket to happiness! 'Wrong answer and thank you for playing.'

Let me start by saying this: Don't ever order a drink that is acidic when you have cuts on your inner lips!!! That has got to be one of the dumbest things I've done in a while. I guess braces affects your brain too! I got a big wake up call on my first gulp when i purposely poured some icey juice in between my gum and teeth to try and cool down the pain. I figured, wow I must enjoy torturing myself. Why don't I just go play on the highway down the street.

Image

Somehow I managed to finish my Jamba Juice before my third and final class of the day. By that point I was in some serious pain and wondering what to do about it. Still I was not thinking about the wax!!! Earth to Michael...come in Michael...

In my 3rd class, I had some students that have gone through the experience and they were quick to offer up suggestions. The key words I picked up on were 'Oral-Gel', 'Apsirin/Advil' and WAX! This stuff aint rocket science, but I guess I forgot how to ease pain since I never get sick.

After class, I should have drove straight to Wal-Greens. Did I? Well of course not...I like torturing myself remember. Instead, I went over to drop off my snowboard so I could get it waxed for the new storm coming in this weekend. Then I decided to get gas for the vehicle because I noticed the gas light was on and I totally forgot it had been on earlier in the morning when I got to school. By the time I did all that, the pain was getting worse and worse, so then I finally drove to Wal-Greens!

Image

I stocked up on lots of wax, oral-gel and some other goodies to help out with sores on my lips. I dropped another $75 that I can add to the total cost of this whole deal (which I'm keeping track of). I walked out of the store, got in the vehicle and immediately ripped open some wax and put it on my lower brackets. let me tell you that it was a bit of heaven for me! Instantly I felt the scraping come to a halt!!! But of course the damage had been done to my inner lips, so now I'm nursing that back to health with lots of oral-gel moisturizer (it's calle 'Oral Balance'). Good stuff! It keeps my lips nice and wet which feels much better than dry and cracked like the desert floor.

That evening I could not concentrate on work though. Trying to stay focuses on some advertising design projects was difficult at best and I didn't get much done.

For dinner, I had my favorite. A nice New York steak broiled to near perfection (slightly well done). It took a long time to eat, but damn it was good! I cut that thing up into the smallest pieces that I could. That saved me a lot of chewing and I could almost just swallow the pieces. I also had some pasta again to supplement that, which again went down very well and was soft to chew on.

Afterwards, I brushed and then spent the next 25 minutes trying to floss. That is quite possibly the most frustrating task of anything. It's ridiculous trying to thread every single tooth one-by-one, meanwhile I'm slobbering all over the place, tearing the floss abnd otherwise making a mess of the bathroom countertop.

I went to bed early and actually got some really good sleep. I was tired probably from the whopping 4 hours I got the night before and I slept like a baby. Woohoo :D

Hi Michael

I love your enthusiasm and writing style, very entertaining start to your brace diary. I guess you've learnt an early lesson the hard way, if the brace is rubbing put some wax on. Hope you heal soon and use the wax for as long as you need it. 3 months down the line I still wax my lower central incisors and if I forget I feel it. Pretty soon your mouth will adjust and toughen up. Many here swear by the salt water rinses so they are worth a try.

Love the script and photos, not to mention your attitude. Steak for dinner on day two - brilliant!

I've been to Fresno a couple of times, as my sister and family used to live there. This was back in the 1980's, btw, I guess it's changed a bit since then.

I will continue with my story soon as I get back from snowboarding. I'll have more pics and stories to tell about my adventures with braces, and how well I fared. I've got my new to-big-for-my-mouth-to-close-over-and-it-looks-weird mouthguard packed in my snowboardin bag and I'm ready to go. :D

I've also got some more pic updates coming from the previous day ;)

See you soon.
