Milk n Cereal has finally returned :)

The Start of Something New

Hello everyone! I have been browsing ArchWired for the past couple months and have finally decided to begin documenting my journey. :D

Now for the background. First off, I realize AW is mostly a community for adults, but the information has been wonderful and I love reading everyone's stories and watching the progress. A big thumbs up to everyone here! I hope you don't mind another crazy teen joining the gang. Anyway, I'm 16 and have never had a problem with my teeth in the past. Just last year I began noticing some gaps and crowding. Even still, I always smiled brightly in photos. :) It was nothing major, so my parents decided that treatment could wait. A month or two ago, in the middle of all conversation my mother blurted out, "Wow, when did your teeth start looking so bad?" Gee, thanks mom! We finally decided it was time to start looking for an orthodontist.

I started out making an appointment for a consultation with the orthodontist my cousin had. She had gotten de-braced a couple months ago and her teeth looked great! When I went into the office I was a bit .. lost. I suppose the receptionist/font desk lady just expected me to know what I was doing, but I sure didn't! I wrote my name and appointment time down on the clipboard, handed her the paperwork that I had received and sat down to wait. And wait. And wait. Patients were flying in and out and I was still just sitting and waiting. After about 35 minutes of waiting, I was called into a separate room in the back to wait for another 10 and the doctor finally came strolling in. He had me lie down in a chair and prodded around my mouth a bunch, scribbling a bunch of who-knows-what onto his clipboard. At the end he was just said something along the lines of, "Alright well I can surely do this for you. The lady at the front can tell you how much it is and we can get started at your next appointment." -blinkblink- Uhm.. was that it? What about your plans for my treatment, treatment time, pictures, etc? I had many things to ask but I could already tell that this was not the place for me. I thanked him and walked out the door.

A week later [Tuesday, July 24] was my second consultation. This ortho was a somewhat family friend and also Vietnamese, which my parents liked for the easier communication. The downside? The office is an hour away. The one I had been to earlier was only about 15 minutes away and I would have been able to drive there myself for adjustments. Despite the long drive, I'm sure its going to be worth it. I walked into the office and the ladies at the front greeted me with big smiles. It was a clean and pretty modern place, I was definitely liking it. After waiting a mere 5 minutes, I was called in to get pictures taken of my profile, arches, etc. Man are those lip spreaders funny! I'm not used to having to open my mouth so wide. :o He then uploaded them to his computer so I could see everything. He explained what the problems were and how long he thought it would take, etc. I was very satisfied with the amount of information he provided. One of the main assistants/receptionists came in to discuss pricing, etc. I told her that I was interested in clear brackets on top and she said that was fine. After punching all of the numbers into a calculator, it turns out that the total was a good $600 cheaper than the first office! I'm sure we'll end up using a big chunk of the difference for gas money, but still, things were looking up.

We had decided on porcelain brackets on top and the traditional metal ones on bottom. Most of the members here who have clear braces have ceramic brackets .. are the porcelain ones much different? I forgot to ask to see the model and ask questions :( too caught up in everything else! The only thing I am not too happy about is having to wear headgear to fix my bite. I'm excited about the braces, not at all embarrassed, but the headgear is getting to me. x_x I realize its only for home use, but what if I get a part time job for after school? That would be less time for me to wear the gear, and therefore longer treatment time. Any encouraging words or advice?

Back to my visit with the ortho: After my father signed some papers and agreed on a payment plan, I was off to get all of the records done. First were the x-rays. Oh dear are those interesting. The first one had my standing with to metal rods in my ears and something on my forehead, the second while biting a stick to take the panoramic. I felt so silly! After that was the "fun" part - molds. First was the bottom. It felt exactly like what everyone told me it would: having a mouth full of goop. I had to concentrate on breathing from my nose, but it wasn't all too bad. Taking the mold off was the hard part! There was a lot of tugging and pulling until Pop! Air was let in and the mold was let out. The assistant looked at it kind of funny and continued to prepare the upper mold. Same situation, easier to take out. Hurrah! ..or so I thought. She said that she needed to redo the bottom mold again. It went the same as the first time. Finally done with both, I went to wash the goop out from my mouth .. and off my chin .. and upper lip .. and everywhere else.

Finally all cleaned up, my ortho instructed one of the assistants to put spacers in. DUN DUN DUNNN! The one thing that everyone has told me they dreaded. She put in four on my upper molars. Getting them in was no problem, I felt nothing. They called my dad in to tell me what they did and what it was for and we were then on our way!

It seems as though I am out of time for now - I will be back this afternoon to tell of my spacer woes and share some pictures!

:-*

Oh, and I forgot to mention!
B-Day = Tuesday, July 31
*awaits Karen's famous saltwater rinse & such post* :P

Gosh, I never knew I had so much to say! More to come :)

Hi M & C!, and welcome!

It sounds like you made a wise choice in seeing the second ortho, even if he is a little further away distancewise. You're generally better off going with someone whom you can work with, who will be straight with you, and most important of all, whom you can feel comfortable with.

I really enjoyed your description of your consultation and records! You have a very refreshing, relaxed writing style -- perhaps you've thought about doing something like that professionally?

I'm afraid I can't give you any feedback about the headgear part of it, but I'm sure others on the forum can.

In any event, you seem to have a great attitude, and that will serve you well during your treatment.

Best of luck :!: I look forward to following your story, and to seeing your pics!

Welcome Milk N Cereal...I found your username to be A FUNNY! I am sitting at work and I was grinning at my stupid monitor looking at your username. The other lady I work with probably thought I went crazy. Once I started reading your entry, I was surprised that you are only 16. Your writing flows very well and is organized, difficult for even some CEO's of big companies. Geez! Well good luck on the spacers! I'll be checking back on Tuesday for your next great entry!

Spacer Woes

Thank you for the support cwatt1, bracedagain, and Miss Smiley! It is so nice to have people to talk to that know what the whole experience is like! As for my writing, I find it surprising that y'all say think so. Thanks! English was never (and still isn't) my forte in school but I guess I'm surviving. :D And as for the username, Miss Smiley, I'm hoping it is funny because you are familiar with the lovely the video of the two boys lip-syncing to the song? I'm sure I've watched it more than a couple dozen times now!

Well, onto the update continuation :!: I suppose I shall start by describing what needs to be done. Actually, why don't I just show you?

Image Image
The photo on the left is of my teeth about half a year ago. There are some minor crowding and spacing issues, but nothing too terrible. On the right is what they look like now (well, a day after spacers were put in). As you can see the issues I have before have now intensified and my arches seem narrower :?:

Image Image
I also seem to have a problem with my bite, hence the need for headgear. I've got a slight overbite and a good deal of overjet as you can see above, along with those dreaded openbite-like gaps. (What is that called?)

Image Image
On the left you can see my lower arch and on the right is my upper arch, sporting those lovely ever-so-popular blue spacers! My brother's friend who is in college and had her B-Day a couple of weeks ago referred to them as rubbery blue corn.

As I stated in my first post, getting the spacers in was not a problem at all. They did not hurt until about 5 hours later when I tried to eat some Vienna Sausage. They are very soft but MAN did my teeth get angry at me! The spacers are working on my molars which are doing a domino effect on the rest of my teeth. My laterals and canines were certainly not happy that night.

The next couple of days weren't too bad. What is odd is that every day different teeth are sore. At first it was my laterals and canines, then my right molars, and today my left! My bite certainly isn't the same, and I'm sure the domino effect has made my problem teeth move in places they shouldn't, but I'm aware that things sometimes have to get worse in order to get better. :P

I seem to find myself clenching my teeth a lot more than usual. I think it is because I keep wanting to check if the spacers are still there! The pain has gone down and bunch and eating isn't much of a problem. I am ready to get these babies out and those brackets and archwires ON!

Welcome Milk and Cereal! You said:

I think that's quite normal. Like you said, it's a domino effect. You will also notice that sometimes you teeth will feel fine, then start hurting a bit again.

Good luck on your journey!

Thank you for the luck nvcarissa!

Today my teeth are feeling fine, although eating remotely crunchy things is a pain! Has anyone lost weight due to having braces on? My teeth either hurt too much to eat with or I find that I'm too lazy to brush and floss my teeth just to eat a snack, so I skip the snack and go on livin'. :)

I think I forgot to include how everyone is reacting to my getting braces. Most of my friends who know are genuinely shocked when I tell them. They all tell me that it isn't needed and that I'll have a grand ol' time in them. (I hope the sarcasm is screaming at you.) I just tell them that I know I won't regret it in the end, and that it was a personal decision to improve myself. :) My boyfriend is still a little apprehensive. He's worried that kissing won't be the same, etc. From what I've read around here, I'm pretty sure things will be back to normal a couple weeks into it. He says he can't wait that long  I am sure we will manage just fine.

Only a few more days until the braces come on!

I've given up snacking since I've had braces, which in my case is a good thing! I was looking for an excuse to jump start me into quitting the snacks, and I have lost weight.

I don't snack because I don't want to bother brushing 6-7 times per day :!: Seriously, though, I'm using this as the basis for establishing what I hope is a lifelong habit.

Aw Karen, I was so looking forward to your oh-so-famous post! Where did it go? :P

I am hoping for the same, cwatt1. I used to have snacks quite often throughout the day and I hope my spacers (and eventually braces) will get me into the habit of avoiding them. :)

My teeth are feeling fine today. I haven't tried eating anything, and usually that is the only time they cause me trouble. B-day in two!

***Oh and, I have somewhat of a silly question for everyone: How do you pronounce self-ligating? Is the first "i" long or short? For some reason I just can't figure it out :? I feel a bit silly asking, but I don't want to butcher it while asking my ortho about them. :P

Haha, oh joy. Can you see why I'm confused? It sounds like it could be either way, and each person I ask says something different. I think when the time comes I'll just see what comes out of my mouth and hope for the best.

Karen, I'd be delighted if you posted it! It's like an official welcome to the club. :P Not to mention a great reminder for every time I check the forum (which is a lot!). Oh and I thought you might like to know, I'm thinking of getting lovely purple ligs on my B-day! (That is, if he doesn't use the self ligating brackets!) Purple is my favorite color aswell.

Welcome to the boards Milk n Cereal. It seems to me you are are going to be a good sport once the braces are on.

I had the same experiance, when I first had my braces on the top row did not hurt, then the next day the bottoms did not, it kepted alternating for a week. Then it was 2 teeth on one side, then on the bottom. It was crazy .

I don't mean to scare you, but on my first adjustment which was in 2 months my teeth hurt like h**. Then 2-3 days of soft foods.

I am 6 months in, if you like ple come check out my progress. There are many pages:) but there is a lot of progress:) To show ya some inspiration. BTW I am 18 :).

Anyways I will stop babbling on your blog and I will try to keep up with your story:)

Take care :) Good luck on your brace day!!!

Well Miss Karen should be correct! Who woulda thunk it since it looks like signature. I check the Dictionary, being the nerd I am, it would have bothered me all night wondering. Now I know the right way is ligature like pie-gature. So...I love apple pies turns into I love apple Li-gatures! Hahahaha Okay I have to get some sleep.

Actually I alway pronounce "ligature" as LIH-ga-ture (soft "i"), but "ligating" as "LYE-gating" :!:

Shall we take a poll

 I love this pronunciation discussion going on here! Thank you for the input Miss Smiley, cwatt1, and Karen!

Miss Smiley: Mm.. Apple ligatures.. Could you imagine if they had flavored ligs? It'd be nice at first and then just mess everything up when eating. :P

cwatt1: That's how I always thought they were pronounced! I'm not alone! :jump: A poll sounds like a great idea.

Karen: Hurrah! Thank you for the lovely post. This thread is now official and ready to go.

One more day and I'll be a lovely brace face. :-#) My friends don't quite understand why I'm excited - but I'm sure everyone here understands. I can't wait to get this process started and going! However last night I had some strange dreams (or should I say nightmares?) about going to the ortho and not being able to get the braces on yet and instead getting more spacers! It was terrible. That best not happen tomorrow.
