Massive Bleeding - Question on Recent Surgery

#1 Post by leopardprint »

I'm posting this for my boyfriend because, apparently, he thinks there's nothing wrong with what's happening to him. Maybe I'm just worrying too much  :biglaf:

So yesterday morning he went in to get 4 impacted teeth (molars) removed. They hadn't even surfaced yet; they were still in his gums. His dentist said that if he didn't get them removed, they would grow in and push the molars that were already there out of alignment and it would be this gigantic mess (in short).

He told me they had to cut his gums and go in from ALL angles, and in the process, two of the teeth broke, and punctured his sinus cavities (apparently they were really close to it). His surgent told him that it happens often and he would be bleeding a bit.

A bit....???

That was 9am yesterday morning, and he's still bleeding the same amount - it hasn't even lessened by a drop. He's been bleeding from his mouth AND nose. He has to constantly change the guaze in his mouth because it soaks up with blood so quickly (I'd say every 20-30mins), and says he keeps throwing up because he keeps swallowing so much blood and it's upsetting his stomach.. His surgent said this was supposed to last for 24-48hrs.

Side story: He can't seem to lie down because of all the bleeding, so he decided to take a nap sitting up. When his sister walked in on him, she screamed and shook him awake because she thought he had died; he had a trail of blood leading from his mouth, down his neck, to a puddle in his lap because he wasn't awake to change the guaze for almost two hours. He said the puddle was massive.

He's in incredible amounts of pain, but he's taking it like such a champ and I'm so proud of him never the less, but I still feel like this shouldn't be happening.

Is this normal or should he go see another surgent/doctor?

Thanks so much for any help. :-1

That does not sound normal to me.

I woud say follow your instincts. If it seems excessive, and you are worried about it then call! Your boyfriend is paying his doctor for a service, you should be able to call anytime if you are worried or things do not appear to be going as planned.

I know losing a lot of blood is not good also, and if the volume has not decreased even a little bit within 24 hours, then that sounds a bit disconcerting to me also.

Personally, if it were me, I would call. If just for nothing else but piece of mind. Every person is different, and if nothing else the doctor needs to be aware of what is happening with him.

When I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth my mouth bled for about 2 days (really gross) without the pressure of my biting down, however if your boyfriend is throwing up and bleeding out of his nose, that seems a little extreme. I would definitely call!

Let us know how he gets along :)

Please call your doctor immediately on Monday. Your boyfriend may also be at risk of infection.

Hi there, I have removed both molar roots (2nd molar remains) and a very impacted wisdom tooth and I was bleeding for 48 hours or so. And I tend to heal fast. I used to wake up with blood all around me in the first two nights. And that was only one and a half teeth, so if he removed all 4 at the same time it's no surprise he's bleeding that much, I just wonder why he is bleeding from his nose as well!? My guess - take him to the doc. ASAP.
PS- Where those teeth molars or wisdom teeth? 2nds or 3rds?
Good Luck with that!

Hey guys - thought I'd leave an update. :)

First of all, I appericate ALL your responses and well wishes! Here's what happened...

Sunday he woke up and he was still bleeding just as much, but the bleeding from his nose had stoped (thank god). He was still bleedingfrom his mouth the entire day just as much as the day he left. However, towards that evening, around 8pm, it started to slow up, until it pretty much completely stoped bleeding around 1am. I BEGGED him to go to the ER or to any doctor and he told me if it's the same on Monday, then he'll go first thing.

Men can be so stubborn. :P

So the next morning, he woke up with blood ALL over him... and a piece of guaze missing from his mouth  apparently, he had swallowed a piece in his sleep. When he got out of bed to wash up, he noticed he wasn't bleeding, and wondered why he had bled in his sleep. So he FINALLY went back to the surgent.

The surgent said all looked good and it was healing nicely. :) He also said the reason for his bleeding at night is because since he is in pain in his sleep, his teeth are grinding against each other, putting pressure on the teeth, wounds, and gums, making them to bleed. He told him to just keep the guaze in over night and he should be fine.

Everything seemed fine with the bleeding, except...

His face had blown up TREMENDOUSLY... I'm not just talking like... swollen... I'm talking stung-by-11ty-billion-bees blown up! I felt so incredibly bad for him; he didn't even want to look in the mirror. The poor kid couldn't talk and it hurt him to smile... but even though it hurt, I had to attempt to make him laugh - laughter is the best medicine, right? :D

Yesterday, again he woke up with a little blood in the quaze in his mouth, but nothing out of the norm, and it is lessening. The right side of his face has completely gone down, and the left side is only slightly swollen.

Now - this part is going to seem a little bit fuzzy and awkward, but that's because I don't exactly remember word for word what he told me (I'll get back to you on that after I have him explain again today;)) - He had to go in for another checkup with the surgent yesterday, and he basically said everything is looking good, and gave him the basic ground rules (no sports, boxing, etc. (he's a boxer)), and then continued to tell him that he's a special case...

The surgent said they had to cut out and create "windows" in his gums to see and get into where the impacted teeth were inside the gums. Because of this, it has serverly weakened his jaw, and the slightest knock could cause the lower part of his skull to cave in on itself. I'm sure there's a very technical (and clearer) way of explaining that but I kept having to shush him because all the description he was giving me gave me the weirded-out-painful-goose-bump-chills
.

Other then that, he's still in pain, and they won't let him get another pain killer refill and he only has two left, so he's trying to hold out on using them incase it gets any worse. He's been such an amazing trooper through this whole thing - I envy him. I had braces for 3 years and complained and complain and whined for years... for absolutely nothing! :P I'll see how he feels when he wakes up today. :)

I believe they were 2nd upper molars, but I'll check with him today on that.
