A Herbst Appliance is mainly used to help correct a Class II Malocclusion in children. It attaches to the upper and lower molars with stainless steel bands, and gently encourages the lower jaw to move forward. The Herbst Appliance includes a piston-style spring which provides the required gentle force when the child opens and closes their mouth. It is a fixed appliance, which means that it is cemented into place.
Because the Herbst Appliance only works in people who are still growing, it is not used in adult orthodontic treatment. Most children who need a Herbst Appliance will wear it for 6 months to a year, until the desired jaw growth and proper occlusion are achieved. The Herbst Appliance was invented in 1909 by German orthodontist Emil Herbst, and is named after him.
