A Diastema is a space or gap between two teeth. Most commonly, it appears between the two upper front teeth, but it can occur between other teeth as well. Sometimes a gap will occur if the teeth are too small for the jaw, or if the Labial Frenum is oversized. No matter the reason, braces can easily fix gaps between teeth.
Some websites promote little rubber bands to put around your teeth to close gaps. This is a very bad idea. The rubber bands can get lodged up into your gumline and cause infection and periodontal disease. Also, you must keep in mind that all of your teeth need to be aligned properly, not just the two that are gapped. Trying to fix a gap yourself can result in worse problems for your bite and the alignment of your teeth.
