A Poking Wire is a term used to describe what happens when the arch wire begins to poke out of one side of the bracket on the back molar. During orthodontic treatment, when the teeth begin to move, sometimes the arch wire begins to get displaced, causing it to poke out of the end of the last bracket. This can be very uncomfortable and may painfully tear up the inside of your cheek. If it continues, it might cause bleeding or infection. If you get a poking wire, don’t hesitate to call your Orthodontist to get the wire clipped. It only takes a couple of seconds to clip the wire. Many orthodontic offices let you drop in to get the wire clipped without an appointment.
