I saw changes very quick - a couple of weeks. Your teeth will probably be moved a lot over your treatment! I saw changes every time I went in for tightening.

My ortho said the same thing about using the baby (or kids) toothbrush. She said the electric toothbrish was fine too. She said to brush more than normal - try to brush after every time you eat. It's hard and I don't always do it, but when I do, the adjustment appointments are quicker.

I went snorkeling with them, and it was fine. You have to clench your teeth a bit to keep the mouthpiece in so I'd wait until your teeth are no longer sore. Mine are 7750 for uppers and lowers. Depends on the severity of your case though.
