I also had an open bite, and I had to decide whether or not I wanted to go through with surgery. Basically, my options were: 1) get surgery + braces, be inconvenienced for two years, and have perfect teeth/bite for the rest of my life, or 2) don't get the surgery and struggle for the next couple dec...

Hi there, I had Le Fort I and was tightly banded for the entire six weeks of healing. I was SO sick of the elastics and SO happy when I got them off. Then I had three weeks of freedom, went to see my orthodontist, and I am BACK in elastics (thankfully not as tight but still in a really awkward posit...

I was kind of scared of anesthesia too, but it wasn't all that bad. If you're talking about people waking up by accident and getting paralyzed and stuff (a la Hollywood horror movies), I don't think you have to worry about that :P. I think most of those horror stories you hear are probably from peop...

I was required to get my wisdom teeth out too, and I also had a Le Fort I. I've heard differing opinions on the topic of wisdom teeth... some dental practitioners think that EVERYONE should have their wisdom teeth taken out, regardless of upcoming surgery or other problems, and some think that if th...

First of all, I've never heard of anyone nowdays being wired shut for 3 months, no matter HOW extensive. They didn't even wire them shut for 3 months back in the old days when these surgeries were fairly rare. My mom had orthognathic surgery in the early 80's, and her jaw WAS wired shut, but only f...

Re: For Those That Have Had Surgery
1. Was surgery worth it? Absolutely. Man, waking up after the surgery and feeling my teeth touch together properly (I had an open bite) was simply magical. I wouldn't have missed it for anything in the world. 2. If you could do it all again, would you? Would you make any changes? I would definitely...

There wouldn't be any risks if I stay the way I am now, because as I've said I have no problems. This is the thing I'm trying to explain, it is not medically necessary. Unless I want absolute perfection. I think the thing is that you have no problems NOW, and it is not medically necessary NOW, but ...

Thanks for the replies everyone! :D But UGH ! They come out??? I know this sounds dumb but I just assumed that they would kinda melt away... I've had stitches before and they didn't have to come out or anything, they just sort of disappeared. I was brave and I did some prodding with my tongue...

lol @ driving instructors making recommendations about orthognathic surgery  ... But I know how you feel about wanting to just get the surgery out of the way. I was planning a trip to Guatemala with my Aunt this summer, but up came the surgery date and, like you, I just wanted to get it done. ...

Hi ema27, I just had my surgery 2 1/2 weeks ago and I was in the middle of my driving lessons too (I'll be taking my test at the end of the summer). My first driving lesson after my surgery will be exactly 3 weeks post op, but I think I could've started at about 2 weeks. It all depends on how you fe...

Question About Stitches
Hi there everybody! I'm 19, I'm new to this board, and I just had a Le Fort 1 surgery about 2 1/2 weeks ago. I was just wondering: how long does it usually take for stitches to heal? I'm too afraid to try tonguing around up there to see for myself how much they've healed (wimp :P) and I'm still too ...
