If this the kind of wonderful treatment we Americans can expect with socialized medicine, then I don't want it! There's good and bad in every profession in every country. I'm aware of that. If that's the impression you want to take of the NHS and assume you know all about it, then be my guest. Than...

So midline ost = sarpe? Nope. I misspoke. Midline osteotomy is on performed on the mandible (not the max) to ease constriction. Sorry for the error -- I was up all night so the neurons aren't firing. Won't be making that mistake again. We still don't hear the term much around here, but I bel...

Osteotomy means the surgical cutting of bone. My understanding is that the procedure known as midline osteotomy is splitting the hard palate in the midline (the center, where the two halves are fused) and then putting hardware in so that bone can grow in the space, thereby expanding the maxilla. It ...

Very enlightening. Thanks for your comments. So it's just hype. Okay, while we're on the subject of extractions, how do you guys feel about this? I read the article in the main section of this website regarding extractions and other articles as well. Most indicate that pre-ortho extractions are not ...

Possible Tool for Recovery
Came across this CD, "Surgical Support." I have used CDs from this company (HemiSync) in the past with fantastic results, so I just purchased this one. (My orthognathic surgery is a ways off, but I will be undergoing gum grafts soon.) Maybe this will help you guys too. Something to conside...

Hi, Well that was a big can of worms, wasn't it? You asked lots of good questions, and here are the answers: * I will be changing jobs, so will have a new group insurance plan. (HIPAA [federal law] prevents them from doing the pre-existing condition thing on group insurance benefits) * I will be mov...

Damon system for surgical patients?
Has anyone here (orthognathic surgery patient) had Damon braces? According to the claims, they move teeth faster and with less force. Since less force = less stress, then they must cut down the risk of root resorption, although I cannot find any solid connection on the Internet. Also, when using thi...

Insurance vs. Self Pay
After months of researching, it has come down to the wire. At this point my options are: 1) Move to another state such as CA, where insurance providers are prohibited by law from blanket exclusions for orthognathic surgery. 2) Pay for the surgery myself. #1 is probably what I will wind up doing. Whi...

Well I for one feel that braces take about ten years off, that's why I can't wait to get them!! But I'm a little older than you (45). All major changes require adjustment. Just keep thinking about how far you've come and what the ultimate outcome will be -- you will look soooo good when all is said ...

Wrong type of study performed
UPDATE: Well I will have to undergo ANOTHER sleep study. The ONE time I didn't do my homework, it came back to bite me. The study that was done at Arete did not check for UARS (that is separate, additional monitoring), only for apnea -- which I probably don't have, although I don't have the report y...

Kaiser Permanente Guidelines for Orthognathic Surgery (PDF file).
It appears that unless it is cosmetic, they will cover the surgery but not the braces. They will even cover a genioplasty!!
