I had an upper Schwarz for about a year, total expansion of 14mm. I can't say that I noticed any alarming sounds, but it was really painful to remove and refit for a few days after each adjustment (it hurt slightly in a constant way for about the first 6 weeks, then only around adjustment time). Kin...

I haven't heard of both appliances being used, but my first appliance was a combination of the two (with loops behind canines, as my treatment involved expansion across this area as well as the molars). I'd imagine having both appliances seperately would be a bit of a pain in the rear! :(

Thought I'd join in the ranting here, by saying that I'm going through hell at the moment. I've had braces in one form or another, for 18 months, and this is the worst that my mouth have ever felt following yesterday's work. Mine is quite a complicated case, but basically since day one I've had a lo...

Pizza, burgers (fast food style), and "ice cream van stuff" for me, really miss those. Basically, food where you wouldn't normally use a knife & fork, and it's not practical to do so. I also kinda regret having eat mush every time I get an adjustment (normally corned beef hash, w...

 Haha, sorry mate, had to laugh at that! Put it this way, it's better than staring at the ceiling, or some weird photo slideshow/video thing! I'm sure she's completely unaware of the attraction, unless you've given something obvious away (you really don't wanna do that, as macgirl says), so jus...

Might be worth giving your ortho's office a call - it could very well be wisdom teeth causing trouble, but could be a TMJ issue or some alignment issue. You are wearing your retainer, right?

Speech will be...an adventure. Well, much like the rest of the braces experience, it'll be unusual at first, and take getting used to. Although it's easier said than done, the best way to get used to it, is to act like nothing is different. Ok, there will be some words that you just can't say (or, i...

Chocolate is awesome!! Gotta go for the pure stuff though - if it's got bits that don't melt (e.g. honeycomb!), it's such a pain. Suck it to death, tastes better that way anyway!

Stainless steel after 2 months?

I had an adjustment yesterday (2nd one), and they took off the original wire (the freeze spray-reactive one), and replaced it with stainless steel which is stiffer? The measurements were (I think) 0.19 x 0.22 - does this make it a rectangular wire? If so, I thought they were used near the end (or at...

Just ball a bit of wax up with your fingers, and then squish it onto anything sharp (i.e. the end of the wire). It makes the wire smooth, so it won't dig in.

My pain tolerance is good, apart from sharp brackets/wires

Yeah man, rice is the worst! I think it's because it's so small, you can't feel it stuck at all. Other stuff you can feel it stuck in there (even if you can't dislodge it), but rice seems to be the ninja-food to brace wearers!
