I would probably say something along the lines that I was sacrificing today so as to have the braces on for the shortest time possible. You have the rest of your life to eat the bagel.

I found the spacers much worse than the braces. More annoyed with the ulcers in my mouth than tooth soreness. Big thing is do NOT take advil or ibuprofin as it slows the movement of the teeth.
