In terms of missing work versus school, it really depends on what type of field you're heading towards. In my case I would have been much better off if I had done this while in University - my parents medical plan would have paid for the braces at that point, plus I'm an engineer and my job is fairl...

I travelled at 6 weeks after surgery as well with no problems. If you still have trouble with congestion at that point, just pick up a decongestant at the drug store to take before your flight, other than that you should be good to go at that point.

ooh, ice cream, I forgot about that... I drank a LOT of milkshakes! There's a place down the street from me that makes a peanut butter chocolate milkshake - so yummy!!! Tastes like a liquid reeses peanut butter cup! I think it was just a vanilla milkshake with chocolate syrup and some peanut butter ...

There's nothing your doctors can do about this - it's up to you to consume enough calories after surgery to keep from losing weight. I lost 5 pounds at most after the surgery (I was even gaining weight for a while). East lots of cheesecake, cream based soups, and put butter (and/or melted cheese) in ...

They won't schedule you in to see the surgeon again till you're much closer to surgery. About six weeks before I would be ready my ortho called the surgeon to set up a date for surgery and then they called back with an appointment to see the surgeon two weeks before the surgery date. They won't sche...

I do tech support for a software company (a lot of talking on the phone) and I went back after 3 weeks, but stayed as backup support and avoided calls entirely for the first week. I was able to talk and understandable, but it was painful to talk for extended periods (like 10 minutes) at a time. It w...

I second what mjj929 said... go for a consult with a cosmetic dentist. You are more likely to get the 'perfect' results you want from there then going through jaw surgery which is a little less precise and difficult to impossible to reverse.

Ummm, I haven't had a baby (and don't plan to for that matter) but I'm pretty sure it's hard on your body and going in for jaw surgery within a month of giving birth would probably result in a significantly longer recovery time from the surgery. If your ortho is saying 6 months I wouldn't take that ...

You haven't said what area you are from to compare to. Usually you go to see an orthodontist first who decides what type of surgery you need (if any), and the ortho refers you to a surgeon who they know can perform the surgery you require. Also, in some parts of the world they have different names f...

Jaw surgery is going to change your face. If you want to do cheek implants as well I would suggest waiting till after the surgery (and swelling has gone down) to decide if you still want the implants, and size and everything to balance out your new features.

You would have to check with your surgeon on this one. Although at 4 weeks there is probably still a lot of swelling affecting how things look.

I avoided pressing things against the roof of my mouth (I've only been able to eat rice recently) but things not requiring any breaking down should be fair (and legal) game. Mashed potatoes you can just shove in with a baby spoon and swallow if they're smooth enough. Same with mashed up veggies like...

I consider mashed potatoes a liquid :P If you mix them up with gravy and a bit of milk they should be runny enough to work.

I wasn't allowed to try solid food till 6 weeks post op (I was allowed soft food at 2 weeks) but even at 9 weeks there are a lot of things I still can't eat. I had a slice of pizza today and still had difficulty eating it. Even when you get the ok you'll need to take it slow

The day of my surgery I couldn't get my nose ring out (it was a stud with a ball on the end) and the anesthesiologist said he'd pull it out once I was under. When I woke up I stuck a different type in that didn't have a ball on the end and figured I'd put my old one back in later once I was healed a...
