No chewing
After my TMJ surgery I had three months of no chewing, and then three months of soft chewing. I now have braces so I'm still seeking soft chew foods. The Braces Cookbook was helpful more for the advice it gave than the recipes. I survived on meal replacement drinks, mashed potatoes, hard-boiled eggs...

Jabbing wires
I have the self-ligating brackets and, I guess, fat cheeks. Those wire ends were really a problem. Now the tech trims the wires so they end in a tube bracket, and adds stops to the wire. The stop keeps the wire from moving. I think it's helped a lot.

Can't tolerate braces (doc answers please)
I would love to hear from any ortho docs out there: I seem to be intolerant of the brackets and wires in my mouth. I am one of those sensory perception disorder people. I used a mouth splint for two years for TMJ treatment. When it really started bothering me, I could remove it for a few hours. I ca...

Corrrection to earlier post
Your braces look like mine, and I live in Austin, Texas, too. GAC is the company that sells the Innovation Cs which is what I have. They're self-ligating so there are no tiny elastics around each bracket. I'm a newbie too. Whoops, sorry. I have In-Ovation Rs, not Cs. See http://www.gacinovation.com/...

Removing braces early
Isn't it also a litigation defense for the ortho? (Sorry about being so American in my thinking...) Your ortho is as responsible for your teeth as you are. If, at the end of treatment, your teeth are rotted and your gums are awful needing special periodontal care, the ortho could be sued for malprac...

Almost 60!
I've been trying to get a thread going for people over 50 (whatever) undergoing braces treatment. Except for gray hair matching metal braces, I'm wondering if there are any concerns I need to know that coincides with my age. (I wish there was a senior discount.) I started with a year in a mouth spli...

Crowns
I had to have my four, back, lower crowns replaced in preparation for braces. (The crowns replaced were gold and porcelain. The new temporary crowns were built up 2 mm in order to adjust to my jaw correction.) Any way, brackets can't adhere to gold. If you have gold, orthos use these bands which mea...

Advice for Unbraced People
Additions to this thread has dwindled probably because we've said it all. I've compiled (and edited) what was posted. There's only five dos, so feel free to add more. Don’t pinch our cheeks. Don’t assume we’re correcting our teeth just to be in style or that we’re vain about our appearance. ...

TMJ start too
I posted this in the "Braces Story" but didn't get a response from any one. The Metal Mouth Forum seems to have the most traffic. I started with TMJ popping and locking (and headaches and neck pain). Chiro adjustments on my TMJ would just slip back. My chiropractor referred me to an oral s...

Started with TMJ treatment (Saysee at 59)
I started with TMJ popping and locking (and headaches and neck pain). Chiro adjustments on my TMJ would just slip back. My chiropractor referred me to an oral surgeon. Animated MRIs showed both discs were out of place. Oral surgeon referred me to splint dentist. I wore a splint in my mouth 24/7 for ...

Why teeth hurt
I read a very good article about this but can't find it. The following is from Wikipedia: Teeth move through the use of force. The force applied by the archwire pushes the tooth in a particular direction and a stress is created within the periodontal ligament. The modification of the periodontal blo...
