Re: Want surgery vs Need surgery?
Because after 40 years of living with a mouth that did not close without assistance and having to fear a mirror catching me at that "bad" angle, I just wanted it fixed. My ortho didn't think I needed it, told me it was a lot to go through for minimal gain. Unless your one of us that have l...

Re: What does it feel like to have hardware in the upper jaw
I have to agree with everything Bracedfaced says, the genio is the most annoying. My surgeon stitched the muscle to the bone in my case, which feels very tight and hard. I had a 4mm upper jaw impaction and do not notice any nose changes. I am 3 months post op and I still have a lot of sensitivity ar...

Re: What does it feel like to have hardware in the upper jaw
When the surgeon took measurements for my surgery, he told me I had a 1mm cant (very minor), but enough to throw my midline off. He fixed this when he did the impaction and moving the upper jaw forward.

Re: Surgery in another country
Here's my story: I always knew my jaw was not properly aligned. I could not close my mouth without forcing it closed. My upper maxilla was too long and my lower jaw was receded. Years ago, I went to an oral surgeon who confirmed I did need surgery. I was not covered and eventually moved out of state...

Re: stinging numbness after surgery
I am almost 3 months post off. I went through the stinging/burning phase, it will go away and be replaced by the tingle to the touch phase. I can finally feel my lower lip although it is still quite numb. My chin (I had a genio) is taking the longest, still quit numb and tight. Apparently I had a mu...

Re: SCUBA Diving After Surgery - Will this ever be possible?
I have been diving with braces for 2 years. I do not have any problems, I use an Aqualung Legend regulator. Today will be my first day of diving after jaw surgery in May. Although I am only going to be doing a Discover Scuba class in a pool (I am the instructor), I can't wait to get back in the wate...

Re: Help with saliva issue!
Have you tried to suction out the saliva? I basically just let the saliva drool on to a towel and tried to gently pull the phlegm from my throat. I know is is gross, but you were at day 2 and it is one of the hardest. By now, you should have some improvement. Sorry took so long to reply, but is is t...

Re: MAY 2011 BUDDIES!!!!
Hi All, Aussiere here. 5 weeks post op. Still a lot of swelling, jaw looks square and cheeks look sunken in (could be the weight loss). I have dark circles under my eyes, I feel like I am sleeping ok, but maybe I'm not. My face looks really weird/scary to me - like it is contorted or something. I ca...

Re: Any adults in their 40's on here?
Thank you for answering,Aussiere, Do you mind sharing what you were told about the effects on the skin? I hope you're not in too much pain. No pain, just some swelling. My surgeon kept telling me over and over again, I cannot judge anything until the 6 month mark as it takes that long to settle. Th...

Re: SCUBA Diving After Surgery - Will this ever be possible?
I am a Divemaster and worked at this professionally. It was one of the first questions I asked. I had surgery on both jaws and was told 2 months, but he would prefer 3 months. The jaws are fully healed at 2 months, but the concern is with the valsalva method of equalization. Basically, when the uppe...

Re: Any adults in their 40's on here?
Hello Aussiere, Hi gems4deb, I will be 3 weeks post op on Tuesday. I had upper jaw advanced and moved up, lower jaw moved 7mm on one side and 8mm on the other as well as a genioplasty. I am one of the unfortunate ones that did not have insurance that covered orthognathic surgery. Did you have all t...

Re: MAY 2011 BUDDIES!!!!
Not through the woods yet....but, this weekend has made a huge difference. Last week I posted I looked like a bulldog (and as Titaniumadded pointed out, I now had an underbite), that is exactly what I looked like. I thought maybe the surgeon messed up the measurements and reversed something that gav...

Re: Any adults in their 40's on here?
Hi gems4deb, I am 50 (51 in September), live alone, no children, family on other side of the county, etc. I will be 3 weeks post op on Tuesday. I had upper jaw advanced and moved up, lower jaw moved 7mm on one side and 8mm on the other as well as a genioplasty. I am one of the unfortunate ones that ...

Re: MAY 2011 BUDDIES!!!!
I also have quite a bit of numbness and swelling, although last night the nerves were coming alive in my bottom jaw and it was painful and uncomfortable. But, my real concern it that my lower jaw sticks out past my upper jaw (like a bulldog). I am starting to get nervous this isn't right. The OR tel...

Good luck SB4512!
I am now 8 days post op, still have some swelling, but coming along nicely. I am on a strict liquid diet for 4 weeks and I am so hungry. What have you done to combat the hungers and when did your doc allow soft foods to your diet?
