Re: Questioning having Lefort 1 Osteotomy in a couple weeks
Looking at your pictures your bite doesn't look too bad and my immediate thought was that surgery seemed a completely over the top option. But that said, my open bite wasn't too bad at 22 (though it was worse than yours) and now ten years later it's about the same as Baligirl's pictures. Can you ask...

Re: how many appointments?
Thanks for your replies. It hadn't even occurred to me that I could request a new ortho but keep the surgery at my current hospital. I doubt they'll allow it because the ortho is hospital based too, but worth investigating. At the end of the day, all surgeons must be pretty highly qualified and they...

how many appointments?
Hi all, I just asked this in the bottom of another topic, but thought I'd make a new topic of it too. Basically, can anyone who had surgery tell me if it sounds insane to have it at a hospital 3 hours away? We're moving house and I'm six months into braces with Lefort 1 and BSSO scheduled for some t...

Hi Emma I haven't used this board for ages but I think when I was last searching I came across your story and yes, we're in the same boat. No one told me the surgery names either, but from what I can make out it's Lefort 1 and BSSO. I need a wedge taken out of my top jaw (bigger at the back than the...

I'm getting Fefort 1 and BSSO next year for an open bite and no one's mentioned my chin at all. I have the classic 'long face syndrome' and had always assumed my chin was to blame, but I'm hoping that once surgery has moved my upper jaw up and lower jaw forward so that I can actually close my mouth ...

I had braces fitted at 31 and will have surgery some time around turning 33. Like a lot of you have said, I've known for years that it was necessary but was too scared to get treatment, until one day I went to a new dentist who said I should really look into it because my open bite is severe enough ...

I was so freaked out I ignored the whole issue for about 6 years, and then got about five 'second opinions' in the desperate hope someone would wave a magic wand and fix my jaws. Not so. All I got were more and more reports about how it would only get worse. So now I'm in braces and wishing I'd had ...

Can braces cause TMD?
I've had my braces since April and never had any jaw pain before or after. However, since the molar bands were fitted three weeks ago I'm really struggling to chew. At first I just blamed it on getting used to the bands, but now that stage has passed and chewing is getting harder. I can manage a few...

Sardines sounds way too healthy to be a comfort food!! Excellent if you enjoy them, but my personal 'soft' favourite is currently chocolate chip brioche. Wonder what it's like toasted with peanut butter on... Oh, and nutella pancakes - always a favourite. Loving the mushy sandwich option - will reme...

As if anyone could gain weight in their first few weeks in braces!! Didn't you resort to the porridge and soup diet and end up with the flattest stomach you've had for years? Seriously though Believer, I also noticed a fast shift in my teeth, and am keeping my fingers crossed for a fuller looking fa...

I think 6 months is recommended, but I go every 3 months because I hate it so much. I know that sounds weird, but I figure that if I go more frequently it'll take less time each visit. Before braces I left it for years and the process was a much longer, more painful affair than it is these days, eve...

I know exactly how you feel, and my surgery is ages away. I'm naturally neurotic and paranoid and get all these awful thoughts running through my head about what if I die, what if I wake up in surgery, what if I hate the result, blah blah blah. The most important thing to ackowledge is that you are ...

So here I am four days after the bands from hell were fitted, and still not back to 'normal'. I'm using vast amounts of wax, so the insides of my cheeks are not too bad, but I have a constant dull ache in my lower jaw and moderate headache. I'm ok first thing in the morning, but by mid-afternoon I'm...

The NHS is SO slow isn't it - good job it's free (kind of)! I first saw the consultant at the hospital May 2009. They then 'ran out' of ortho appointments, so I couldn't see the ortho until October. Then there was a pointless trip to see a nurse to explain how to clean my teeth after braces were fit...
