Re: Edinburgh Dental Institute

Hi there, I had braces, BSSO and genio at St John's in Livingston, while under treatment at EDI! My ortho there was amazing. She's left now but in my opinion they were all really professional, lovely, kind, considerate people. My surgeon left not long after I had my surgery so I can't vouch for his ...

Re: Numb tongue?

Hi again :) It definitely sounds like you might have rushed into this before you were ready! But that doesn't mean you made the wrong decision! Please don't think that because it wasn't life threatening or limiting that it wasn't necessary. My underbite wasn't that bad, and my appearance never bothe...

Re: Numb tongue?

I forgot to say - I think your surgeon is right. The numb spot was much larger at first and got a lot better after the 3 month mark, when it became apple-seed sized. The only reason I know it's there is because I spent a lot of time prodding my tongue looking for numb spots :)

Re: Numb tongue?

To be honest I'm not really tracking anything :) I don't come on here very often so the signature is still the same as it was just after my surgery! The numb spot is on the left side of my tongue, it's pretty small (about the size of an apple seed) and it just feels a bit tingly when I touch it. It ...

Re: Numb tongue?

Hiya, I'm 18 months post surgery and unfortunately yes it's still partially numb in one small spot. Not enough to cause problems, it's just a bit odd! My chin and lower lip are still totally numb and I've been told that at this stage it's unlikely the feeling will ever come back, which is a bit sad,...

Re: Removal of plates and screws

Thanks for replies! Well, I saw the surgeon yesterday - it's a new guy, the surgeon who did my original operation has left... Anyway, new guy said the screw was protruding too far through my jaw so it was causing ulceration and infection... so the ones on my left have to come out. It will be a gener...

Re: lower jaw surgery (BSSO) and experience of recovery

To be honest, I didn't get a lot of pre-op advice, because I got a cancellation and it was a case of "if you can get yourself to the hospital by 2pm, we'll operate tomorrow morning..." When I got there I was in plastic surgery ward, so they weren't hugely familiar with maxfac but they knew...

Removal of plates and screws

Hello folks, I went to see orthodontist yesterday for a routine check up, & mentioned that my gums felt swollen and sore near the back of my mouth, where the break in my jaw was done... it had been like this for a few weeks, I assumed it was part of the process... But it looks like my body isn't...

Re: lower jaw surgery (BSSO) and experience of recovery

Hi Anna, I was BSSO & genioplasty on the NHS. Opposite direction to you - I had 7mm taken out! From what I've seen on these boards, the NHS experience varies according to health board. My experience was absolutely faultless, I could not be happier. I was sent home with a jumbo pack of straws, sy...

Re: Orthognathic Surgery

@ PrincessLea - my folks weren't supportive either. In fact the day before I was due to have surgery (I got a cancellation, so had less than 24 hours notice to my operation!) they were telling me not to do it. They're probably just worried for you having surgery... that's what my folks thought. They...

Re: Orthognathic Surgery

I knew about it from the age of 18, but didn't bother investigating treatment options 'til I was in my early 20s, when my underbite started to get particularly problematic... But I chickened out of treatment because I was afraid of braces!! Until I realised that 18 months of braces was better than a...

Re: Orthognathic Surgery

Hi Beth, I had the same surgery as you on the NHS in Scotland in January. I was due to have both jaws done, but when it came to the time the surgeon didn't think it would make much difference if I had one or two jaws, so he just did one to save me a bit of trauma :) I stayed in hospital for 3 days a...

Re: January Buddies

Hi everyone! Sorry for the delay - I'm about to move house, so have been going a bit crazy trying to sort out storage for things I can't take with me, packing things I can take... generally sorting out all the nonsense that moving house entails :) Well, what's new... I'm still fighting with my midli...

Re: January Buddies

Hello hello I'm just checking in to see how everyone is. Things here are good - I'm eating a lot more (put on ALL the weight I lost post surgery plus a few extra pounds!) and the cramp has almost gone. If I open too wide then the muscles will remind me *not* to do that again, but otherwise everythin...

Re: January Buddies

Still getting cramp... today I just got really fed up and resorted to mushy food all day. Suzanna - it's taken me a long time to get my mouth to open properly, and I'm still only managing 2.5 finger widths (I would say about 30mm) at the best of times. Because I wear elastics I don't open my mouth m...
