Re: Jaw surgery & hospital costs in Melbourne, Australia

Haha thanks for the reply, I'm actually roughly 5 years post op now - this is a very old thread! I had some moderately bad complications post op but all is well now save for some residual numbness around my mouth/chin on the left. The whole braces/surgery thing cost me $25k and unsurprisingly I'm ve...

Re: April 2012 buddies!

Hi everyone! How are you all going these days? For me, I'm nearly 6 weeks post op, and have been given the go ahead to eat what I like now (not that that's possible...but at least I'm allowed!). The crackliness, or emphysema, I was mentioning feeling in my jaw last post ended up turning into soft ti...

Re: April 2012 buddies!

Great to hear you're perking up a bit, it took me aggeees to watch a movie which was a shame as I'd stock piled so many I wanted to watch and only watched 3 in 3 weeks! I guess you'd be more swollen as you had both upper and lower surgery. I'd say it took a good 2.5 weeks for the swelling to reduce ...

Re: April 2012 buddies!

Glad things are looking up :) when I started to cry at my last surgeons appointment (8 days ago) he said 'don't worry, most people start to feel a bit depressed and crap around day 4-5, you've been very stoic to make it to day 15!'. That made me feel a lot better immediately :) Haha it's funny you w...

Re: April 2012 buddies!

Sorry to hear you're having a rough time. I can guarantee things will start to improve around day ten. Until then, sleep a lot and keep up your pain meds. I was in bed 23 hours out of 24 for the first 7-10 days! Being wired shut sounds horrendous. How do you get liquids in - via a syringe? When thin...

Re: How Accurate are Orthodontist's on Treatment Time?

I was told 2 years 'but by using suresmile technology we can cut the treatment time down by 40%'. Ha! Well, I'm at the 2 year mark now and just had jaw surgery 2.5 weeks ago which I was NEVER advised I might need at the start. I'm looking at another 6-12 months in braces and have spent twice as much...

Re: April 2012 buddies!

AA27 how did your surgery go? How are you feeling? I've been thinking of you! And how are you Kim? My induration is nearly gone, I am so pleased. My main concern is now my midline being about 3mm off centre. I really hope my ortho can correct this with elastics as much as possible eventually. I have...

Re: April 2012 buddies!

Hi Kim, Glad you're going well! Yes the pins and needles is crazily annoying isn't it! I've been having to take sleeping tablets to get to sleep because of it! I've now been able to ditch my V-shaped pillow and back to using 2 regular ones which is awesome. My doc says expect 6mths for sensation in ...

Indurated area post op- advice needed please!

I had a mandibular osteotomy on Apr 16 to correct an 8mm overjet. By Apr 22 I had developed a large (5cm x 3cm), very firm, very painful swelling under my left jawline. My right side is going perfectly well. I saw my surgeon yesterday who cut open my wound to examine it and flush it out. He saw no p...

Re: Teeth removal for overjet

The alternative for you, as it was for me, is jaw surgery to bring your lower jaw forward. These was deemed necessary for me as my ortho said that if he removed 2 upper teeth (to drop my upper jaw back and correct my overjet) this would thin my upper lip and age me prematurely. Best of luck with you...

Re: April 2012 buddies!

Hi Kim, Glad to hear you're almost pain free! What dose of oxycodone were you taking each time? 5mg every 6 hours did nothing at all for me! So my nutrition is really good now- porridge for breakfast, pasta for lunch, risotto for dinner. It's been great to get some decent food into me. Are you manag...

Re: April 2012 buddies!

Hi Kim! So good to hear from you and that things are progressing well! To clean my mouth I brush my teeth where possible with a baby toothbrush (I can stretch my elastics far enough to get it inside my mouth) and I also use a 50:50 2% chlorhexidone:water mouth wash after I eat. My nutrition has been...

Re: April 2012 buddies!

Yesterday just before breakfast surgeon came to see me and placed an elastic running from my upper left front teeth to lower right front teeth, to help with correcting my crossbite. This resulted in the inability to protrude my tongue making breakfast near impossible except for the water and orange ...
