Leah, that's cool you have an ortho like that - means you can be proactive in your treatment. Just as long as he makes sure he does his bit as he should then I'm sure that's cool.

Gosh what an unfortunate situation to be in! To be free of your braces then to be told you need them again. Well though it would be a tough decision I would probably have them applied again but refuse to pay any more money, opt for ceramic ones and ask him for a different type of retainer next time ...

Yes arches can be expanded with braces alone - in fact Damon 3s are apparently especially good for this as they can eliminate the need for extractions and yet still widen the arches leaving enough room for all the teeth. That's good then...can't think what the rough surface might be other than glue unless there is some sort of surface damage.
