Re: Time off work for SARPE

In my experience 10 days off would be about the minimum. I had 10 days off after SARPE and probably could have used another week. I could function but I was exhausted by the end of the day. It takes a bit of time to recover from the anesthetic and to build back up strength. I found that I healed qui...

Re: Intro - And questions about BSSO and SARPE Timeline

Hi Kat, Your situation sounds very similar to mine - over bite, cross bite, narrow palate, crowding, midline off... I had SARPE in June 2010, braces in Sept. 2010 (still on) and am having my BSSO and genioplasty Jan. 9/13. I am a bit older than you so your timeline sounds about right for someone you...

Re: SARPE - How Long Did You Have A Gap For?

I had SARPE in June 2010. My gap was huge (about a tooth and a half wide!) and did not close until about the end of August. My braces went on in early Sept. I only had a small gap by that point and it closed quickly thereafter. I too can echo the earlier comments that, once I was fully expanded, the...

Yes, that was my experience as well. The surgery is covered. Pre & post op visits to the surgeon are not (approx $2000). The anesthesia is not supposed to be covered either (approx $400) but the hospital may not bill you for it.

I only had top braces put on my first 6 teeth as the expander starts on tooth #4 on the top. The remainder of the top braces will be put on when the expander comes out. The bottom braces were all put on but only the first 4 teeth on either side have been wired so far.

Hang in there everyone. The expander is truly a horrible device but it worked for me. I am 40 yrs old. Had SARPE on June 3, 2010. I got my braces on Sept. 8. Truly the worst day was the day the RPE went in. I salivated like crazy. I burped like crazy. I wanted to rip the bloody thing out. My surgeon...

I can definitely sympathize with your concerns about the gap. I had my expander put in on June 2. Surgery was on June 3. I did 2 turns a day for 17 days which opened a huge gap (size of tooth) between my front teeth. I felt ridiculous. It is down down to about 4mm now. I got my braces on Sept. 9. I ...

I got 2 sets of gum grafts before my braces. I did not find the first experience very pleasant. I have a very narrow mouth and lost the protective "flaps" on the donor site after eating the first couple of times. This resulted in chaffing and quite a bit of pain on the roof of my mouth. Th...
