Re: SCARPE- Does this have to be done in a hospital?
My maxillofacial surgeon would also carry the procedure out in his office/surgery, rather than hospital. I'm in Canada, had sarpe and 4 wisdom tooth extractions in hospital under GA, I have seen online blogs where people have had sarpe under sedation and local anaesthetic only. I would recommend con...

Re: Molars don't line up anymore
Sounds like your molar bite is good to me. Your molars shouldn't come down exactly on top of each other, the uppers should be slightly outside of the lower, ie the cusp and grooves of upper and lower molars should align. Extract below is straight from Wiki' if you want the dental terminology; "...

Re: I chickened out of my first meeting today
I decided to investigate braces, and then found out I needed surgery too. It totally freaked me out, but I decided to go for it, even though at 32 I'm one of the older patients of my Ortho'. The surgery went really well and I'm so glad I had it done. Id take a friend or relative with you to your nex...

Re: Nasal breathing improvement?
I had sarpe for a narrow palate and can breath much more easily through my nose. I have fewer colds and sinus infections too.

I had an open bite after sarpe surgery for a few weeks (did not have one before). Elastics sorted it, dont worry!

Re: sarpe vs extractions
van-When did you have yours done and how has it been since? Sorry, Not trying to steal the thread. 14 months ago. No problems at all, I think I expanded about 12mm in total. I have some nerve damage between my nose and top lip, (fair enough considering where the incisions/fractures were) I can feel...

Re: sarpe vs extractions
I just had SARPE (in a 3 piece le fort1 style) done a month ago today. My ortho would not take me on without my doing it. FYI, a SARPE and 3-piece LeFort are two entirely different surgeries; a LeFort is not a "style" of SARPE. In a SARPE, the surgery consists of making an incision in the...

Re: sarpe vs extractions
Eeeek! How confusing! I have to admit, I did not get any second/third opinions when deciding on an ortho. This was because I chose a Dr who is the President of the Ortho' association for my region, an assistant Professor at the local dental school and also specialises in cleft palate treatment, basi...

Re: sarpe vs extractions
I would choose sarpe, but I have had the surgery so I would say that! I would rather not have healthy teeth pulled out personally... My ortho wasn't keen to treat me unless I had sarpe, but my main reason for me wanting braces was a very narrow v-shaped upper bite, he couldnt get rid of this without...

Re: First Oral Sugury
I was violently ill (couldnt even keep water down) with the GA, codeine and swallowing blood. There were alternatives available to codeine and amazing anti nausea drugs out there normally used for chemo' patients. I found acetaminophen was enough for any pain I had after two days. To be honest, Ive ...

Hi,
I think swelling is different for everyone, I dont remember the advice, but ask your surgeon for what to do to help with swelling (ice/heat, sleeping not completely flat) I looked and felt like a hamster for about three weeks after sarpe and 4 wisdom teeth out... It does go away eventually!

Re: Question regarding SARPE and braces
I'd say exactly the same thing as sarpevictim. The surgery is not that bad! I had all four wisdom teeth out at the same time as sarpe, it wasnt that painful, the worst thing for me was nausea. Just over a year later and I am so pleased I had it done!

Re: The price of a new retainer $290?
Seems fine to me.. Material costs, lab costs, Dr time and fees, their insurance, equipment costs and office overheads. It all adds up!
