Re: Anyone choose NO Surgery for an Open Bite?
I had an open bite and was offered my choice between surgical or non-surgical solutions. I don't think the bite affected my speech, but it very much impacted my eating. The eating issues along with my crooked teeth are what directly lead me to seek treatment. The non-surgery route would have require...

Re: August 2012 Buddies!
That's excellent news Nathaniel. As a fellow Feb '11 buddy, I'll be sure to keep an eye out for your tales of a successful double jaw surgery. Best of luck to you and anyone else drawing an August surgery date.

Re: Dealing with nose congestion post-op :(
First off, congratulations on the surgery. I too suffered from congestion, stuffy nose and tremendous discomfort for the first days after my own double jaw surgery. In my experience I only found relief initally using nasal spray (ie. Afrin). However, that is a short term answer and one needs to avoi...

Re: September 2011 Buddies!!!!
I was trying to drink 2 pints of fortified milk each day this time (as recommended by the dietician) but I have a very upset tummy, from the anitiotics I think, so milk is off the menu - I'm a bit concerned about this because the reason my first op failed was that there was no healing on the one si...

Re: So glad to be Canadian
At risk of coming across as an anti-Canadian, this doesn't seem all that great to me. I had my upper and lower jaws moved just last year. I was able to schedule my surgery as quickly as four weeks out (but chose a bit longer) so as soon as my ortho and OS agreed, we had a date selected. And besides...

Re: October 2011 Surgery Buddies?
Congratulations to all the October buddies! @ Adriae - Welcome to "the other side". You will be fine, I'm sure. The first few days of adjustment to the recovery process are the toughest, as you know. Soon things will improve each day and everything will slowly get a easier. @planetpluto - ...

Re: Printed a model of my skull, in 3D!
@Jenny - It's very similar to that one, but the part is created from a liquid resin rather than consolidating/printing powder. Here is a video describing the specific process we use.

Printed a model of my skull, in 3D!
I work for an engineering organization which has some very cool capabilities, including stereolithography (3-dimensional printing). We often print plastic versions of jaw bones and other items for medical purposes...such as a replica of a patient's heart so the surgeon can be sure his tools will &qu...

My unprofessional opinion is that Jamie Oliver has an open bite and also is a tongue thruster.

Re: What about sneezing?
I keep reading that you aren't able to blow your nose for awhile after surgery but what do you do when you need to sneeze? I live in Texas and have terrible allergies, it seems like I sneeze a hundred times per day, what do you do? Sounds absolutely terrible... I too suffer from allergies (dust mit...

Re: New here, thinking about upper jaw surgery..=)
Also, the healing process is usually easier/quicker if you are younger. If you are ever going to go for it, you'd be best to do it now rather than later. Why suffer through another five or ten years of an open bite if you don't have to? I put the surgery off for ten years and wish that I would have ...

Re: Upper jaw surgery - through nose??
I also have never heard of an incision through the nose. That sounds...uncomfortable. Like many others here, I received on key stitch at the bottom of my nose (from inside my upper lip) to keep my nose from widening (known as the "alar stitch"). I had quite a few other stitches too where t...

Re: Starting to chew again
Rizzie - My surgeon told me that the "squishy feeling" would likely last for many months (6 months+), gradually disappearing, before your upper jaw becomes "fixed". In the meantime, I was told that you have soft tissue (and bone plates) holding everything together. True bone grow...
