What is the consequence of spreading out appointments i.e. seeing the ortho every 2 months instead of every month?

Would you know if the orthodontist changes anything during each visit in the 4 weeks?
I'm like half way and my ortho seems to be only changing the wire to the same type each time.
I assume they just want to continue to use the thick wire and changing it because they lose their shape after some time.
