Re: Upper bonded retainer and oral sex...

I've had a fixed wire on my top teeth for over two years - it's very smooth (feels no different to the back of a normal tooth) and you don't even remember it's there most of the time. The only drawback is you can't floss, but you can still use interdental brushes to keep the gumline clean.

Re: I have a surgery date!

My sypmathies Helen - the same happened to me. You get all psyched up, and then a call cancelling everything. You sound like you're taking it remarkably calmly (I was distraught!), but perhaps you could ask if they have a cancellation or stand-by list? My revised date for surgery was five weeks afte...

Re: Eating at 7 weeks

Yeah - I felt like I'd forgotten how to chew. It was like the food was in my mouth but I just couldn't remember what to do with it! You'll get there - just give it a little more time and concentrate on how nice it is not to be liquidising everything. I recommend mashed veg with cheese sauce or onion...

Re: Question regarding Wisdom Teeth Removal Prior to Jaw Sur

Six months seems to be the standard time - it's nothing to do with how easy/hard the extractions will be, but how long the bone takes to heal afterwards. That said, I'm pretty sure I've come across people who had them removed during their jaw surgery, so perhaps it depends on the individual surgeon ...

Congrats on getting your debrace dates! Boatsink - how does it feel? Marian - just over three weeks! You must be thrilled after the long haul you've had. Hope it all goes well.

Re: Do all splints have a screw in the top palette?

Mine didn't. I had double jaw surgery and they just wired the splint to the top brace. I'm in the UK though, where miniscrews seem to be a lot less common than in the States. Not sure why a splint would need a screw.

Re: numbness that is strange post-op

I just remembered - it wasn't exactly a burning sensation, but both my eyes felt hot and were stinging for about a week after surgery, almost as if I'd gotten shampoo or something in them. Never found out what caused it but it didn't last for long.

Re: numbness that is strange post-op

I doubt it's anything sinister. I too had double jaw surgery and genio, five months ago, and my face still doesn't feel completely normal, so you really are in very early days still. I didn't get any numbness or tingling round my eyes, but when I eat something cold I feel like it's trickling down fr...

Re: Advice needed

Marian I share your frustration! My surgery was in February and afterwards everyone agreed my bite looked great and I'd soon be out of braces and there was no way it'd take the whole six months post-op that they'd predicted. Then they said maybe they'd come off 'September-ish', then they said last w...

Scars opening up

Hi all, I'm almost four months post-op (Lefort 1, BSSO and genio) and I've noticed that the scars from incisions that were made for the genio have opened up into what I can only describe as pockets. After the surgery I initially had a couple of dark red scars where the gum and inside of my lower lip...

Re: alternative to zns??

To be honest I don't know much about your type of surgery or where the incisions are exactly - mine was double jaw so the incisions were around the tops of my gums and where my lower wisdom teeth used to be. The syringes had hard plastic tubes but I've seen people on-line using what looked like more...

Re: alternative to zns??

Relax - you won't starve - though it might feel like it at times!! I'm in the UK where Zip n Squeeze just doesn't exist. The hospital gave me syringes with what I can only describe as an extension tube attached to them. You have to put the tube down the side of your mouth and squirt liquidised food ...

Re: March 2012 buddies!

How was your trip? Hope you had a lovely time - certainly very much deserved! Our trip was great, despite the insurance company refusing to cover me and having to find new cover literally hours before leaving... It was so nice to be busy and not thinking about my face! Everything seems to have settl...

Re: Surgery or no surgery? Stuck..

Personally my open bite in my early twenties was annoying in terms of eating but otherwise didn't bother me. But throughout my twenties it got gradually worse until I looked goofy, couldn't close my mouth and had a dull but constant ache in my jaw joints. I saw at least seven different dentists, ort...

Re: March 2012 buddies!

Yay!!! The hooks are off! Never thought I would appreciate how nice it feels just to have a 'normal' brace! I got transferred to a different ortho though who seems to have a different approach and that's thrown me a little. She put in a smaller wire, which the old ortho wasn't going to do yet, and h...
