I actually wash my hawley retainers with dawn dish soap. My ortho suggested it and it works great for me. From my experience, this is okay...just make sure to wear them as much as possible and it should start to fit better. If that doesn't work after a month definitely call your ortho. I would think they can be loosened, but after you wear them as much as possible for a week you should have no more pain. I wear my hawleys 24/7 and when they get tightened t they hurt for a bit but with no time at all, you should be all good:)
