Re: anyone else have the habit of pushing their jaw forward?
Hi! My surgeon called it 'posturing' when you hold your jaw in a certain position, didn't even know it was a 'thing'! I did it ALL the time unconsciously before surgery. For me I felt like surgery made everything a blank slate. Eating felt weird because it didn't feel right and I had to relearn how ...

Re: Terrible result from surgery
I had a 1cm lower jaw advancement, and after surgery, my teeth barely met, and I remember not knowing where to bite down because nowhere seemed to fit but that's what the orthodontic work post surgery are for. Mine was only for 6 months, with elastics, and now 3 years later I still have a perfect bi...

Re: July 2011 Buddies?
Hi IAmSam - I've been looking at your photos too and keep meaning to comment but don't get around to it - in the next few days I will. I've been a bit slack recently with the blogging thing as nothing new to report really, but will get back on it soon. You must be really happy with your results - yo...

Re: July 2011 Buddies?
Well, yesterday marked the 4 week point for me. Right now the only issues I'm facing are the thought of having box elastics for the forseeable future! I can't see much difference in the open bite, but we'll see what happens at the next ortho appointment in a weeks time. Everythings going really smoo...

Re: July 2011 Buddies?
@Iamsam - that's good they don't bother you too much. I know what you mean about the yawning - I feel like my jaw is really straining against the elastics which can't be good! @lucia - good luck going back to work, let us know how you get on energy wise, and how easy it is to get back in the...

Re: any uk open biters?
@Emmauk - I had surgery in the south east with an excellent maxfac consultant who does a LOT of jaw surgery cases. The hospital I went to also specialises in training maxfac doctors so it's a good place to go. I think he's got a long waiting list but it can't hurt to try and get a referral, and see ...

Re: July 2011 Buddies?
@annafaith: honestly, I got really really lucky. The ortho that I see is one of the top invisalign providers in my state so they are capable of handling difficult cases. One of the surgeons I had a consult with said I'd have to get braces on before the surgery so I didn't choose him. The surgeon wh...

Re: Getting Braces TOMORROW! Please Help!?
I started out in braces when I was 23 (had them as a child too) - it takes a while to get used to but within a month I didn't even feel like I had braces on, and the year I spent in them before surgery wasn't bad at all. Hopefully the two years will fly by for you. Here's a few things i can think of...

Re: July 2011 Buddies?
Thanks guys for your responses, seems like there's a wide variety of time between appointments for people. I suppose it all depends on complexity of surgery as well. I've had one post op checkup up five days later and the next one will be a month after my second surgery. Sounds about right as I'm on...

Re: July 2011 Buddies?
@lucia - I didn't realise you were a speech pathologist - I've just finished my first year at uni. Do you specialise in a particular area? 3 week update... Swelling and bruising are now a non issue. Residual swelling is still there but only I notice it. I'm currently in box shaped elastics, one each...

Re: How long to recover from sliding genioplasty?
I got my genioplasty redone about 11 days after jaw surgery because it fractured. I swelled massively with the original surgery, but after the second genio had practically no extra swelling. Tommorow is three weeks post op for me and even after both surgeries I would be fine at this point going on h...

Re: Open bite. Surgery or an extraction that *might* work?
Hi waytooold, Tough decision, but thought I'd share what happened to me, as I've gone down the braces and finally surgery route. At around 10 years old I started my first round of braces with an old school orthodontist who was on his way to retiring. After about 4 years of treatment I achieved strai...

Re: any uk open biters?
Hi, I had an open bite and overjet too and have just been through surgery on the NHS. Only my back teeth touched before, post surgery more of my teeth touch but it's not perfect. It was successfull though and my jaw is in a much much better position. I'm still waiting to see what the orthos plans ar...

Re: Is this weird, or standard?
3 hours seems like a very long time to have a consult. What are they proposing to do to you? Initial consults at my orthos clinic cost £120, (about $200), but I'm in the UK. My first consult only lasted about 45 minutes, in which time they took x-rays and photos and landed the surgery bomb on me :sh...

Re: stinging numbness after surgery
@bullfighter - thanks, I keep reminding myself it's less than a week since I had my genio re-done and that I need to be patient. Time goes sooo slooowly when you're recovering. Hoping to go back to work soon. @aussiere - that's really encouraging, thanks! My genio also feels tight and hard, not sure...
