I had a double jaw surgery.
Some people didn't recognize me. Some people recognized me but we're a bit puzzled at first. And finally, some people never made any comment about the changes in my apperance.
Bottom line, if you need a double jaw surgery, go for it and screw what other people think!

Re: underbite surgery...now looks like overbite :(
How long has it been since your surgery?
In my case, I didn't mind, since it made my upper lip appear bigger while doing the opposite for the lower lip. But IIRC, it took about 2-3 months for my lips to be stable.
1 year and a half after the surgery, my cheeks are still a bit swollen.

You do realize that a mild overbite is the normal bite.
An edge-to-edge bite is not normal or desirable.

Re: Jaw surgery and breathing
I had trouble breathing through my nose before the jaw surgery. As I had had this problem all my life (or as long I can remember) I didn't mind it except that I snored a lot and probably had some mild sleep apnea. Before the surgery I probably had 25% of the breathing capacity that I have now. Right...

Re: To post op. 1 year or more patients.how does your lower
It's been about one and a half year for me. There is still some numbness on some places on the lower lip and I can tickle my lower lip on some spots, which I couldn't before. However I barely notice it. A friend of mine, who had lower jaw surgery too, cannot feel water on his chin we he shaves himse...

Re: Lips not meeting properly after surgery :(
It took me about 10 months for my lips to properly close without any straining.

Re: How long off work?
I took a month off after a bi-jaw surgery. Though I would have been able to get back to work after 2 weeks and a half. For just a lower jaw surgery, 1 week seems a bit short but I think that in 2 weeks you should be able to go back to work.

They removed the wires after about 8 months but got debraced (brackets removed) 9 months after the surgery.

Re: In the final stretch...stupid tiny space won't close!!!
I had the same problem, it turns out that the culprit was small "debris" that got stuck in the brackets. It had been 6 months since they changed my wires and some food and debris got stuck in the bracket blocking the teeth movement no matter how many elastics there were. So maybe you shoul...

Re: November 2013 Surgery Buddies
I'm writing in the off chance that one of my surgery buddy will read this. They removed my wires today, they installed the permanent wires and I've got a retainer now. Bottom line, I keep my brackets for another 5 weeks, if there is no noticeable movement, they will remove by brackers in the beginni...

Re: How long after surgery did braces come off?
It's been almost 6 months and I need to wait at least another 3 months before the orthodontist will consider taking my braces off.

Re: Excess saliva/ underbite?
I had an underbite and long face syndrome and I used to drool a lot in my sleep.
But after the surgery and after the swelling has gone down, I never drool in my sleep anymore.

Quick update :
I'm elastic-free for now. Almost 6 months with elastics.
My braces should be removed in about 3 months.

I think you have long face syndrome along with an overbite. In my case, I had long face syndrome with an underbite.

Re: November 2013 Surgery Buddies
Quick update : I still have some lower jaw asymmetry. The elastics won't be able to completely fix it, I don't care because it is hardly noticeable unless I point it out to people. I still got at least 2 more months of elastics, that's the real bad news and I'll have my braces for at least 4-5 months.
