Removing the expander, is it painful?

I'm having my bone-anchored expander removed tomorrow under local anaesthetic and can't find any information about potential pain and recovery. I'm assuming it'll be fine as the implanted bar isn't very wide. But the surgeon already told me he won't be able to stitch the palate up where the holes ar...

Re: Anyone over 27 who's gotten SARPE?

I'm 27 and had SARPE in June. It's weird, I can see my face has changed a lot when looking at side by side photos (I have a really wide smile now) but looking in the mirror I just look like me! My cheekbones are definitely more pronounced though and face is more oval shape rather than long as it was...

Re: SARPE Surgery

Hi CharlieT, I think the gap closes on its own for a lot of people but if not the braces will take care of it pretty quickly. I got my first Invisalign trays 3.5 months after surgery and by then the gap had completely gone on its own. It's amazing how your teeth just sort of fill in. Hope this helps!

Re: SARPE Surgery

Hi all, thought I would post an update on my SARPE + Invisalign treatment. My teeth have completely stopped moving now, the front two are very crossed over which is weird after having the gap. I feel like my top jaw is well on its way to being healed and I can eat pretty much normally with my back t...

Re: SARPE Surgery

I am supposed to have the second big surgery in 2014 to correct my bite (tilting my top jaw and moving it back I think). I've only been told the Dutch name for this (which I've forgotten!), is this the same as a bimax? I asked my orthodontist if she thought this was completely necessary and she said...

Re: SARPE Surgery

Completely gone, and I totally miss it too! I couldn't believe the rapid healing power of the body—it closed as quickly as it opened. I think I was at maximum 7mm for maybe a 1.5 weeks :GapToothed: and then it just disappeared over the course of 3 weeks. I have a tiny triangle of space at the top (t...

Re: SARPE Surgery

I think there are a few different types, the less common one being the bone-borne (this what I have) which they implant during surgery and screw it into your palate on either side. Ouch. From what I can tell reading people's experiences it's way more common to have the one that brackets around your ...

Re: SARPE Surgery

Congrats kitkat! Glad to hear it all went well. I thought I'd post a gap update... I stopped turning 5 days ago and I already think I can see the gap closing slightly (no-one else would notice, just me!). It measures 7mm so nowhere near as big as some, but still very noticeable. I might be kind of p...

Re: SARPE Surgery

Anastasia, congrats and Kitkat, best of luck for tomorrow! Tips for turning—completely agree with getting someone to do it for you, although I've done it myself a couple of times with no huge problems (I just have to psych myself up first). When I started doing it properly I could really feel the pr...

Re: How do people come up with the money (just curious)?

In the Netherlands everyone pays a set cost for health insurance which is heavily subsidised by the government. It's illegal for insurers to refuse you healthcare or to impose restrictions. Oral surgery is covered under this I think. For SARPE, I know my surgeon had to request permission from the in...

Re: June 2012 buddies

Hi geordie999, sorry, didn't see this post! I am a June buddy but have been posting on the main SARPE thread. Had my surgery on 26 June, all going well. I'm working from home still but hope to be back in the office later this week (after I get some dental wax from the orthodontist's to hide my gap.)...

Re: SARPE Surgery

My op was much shorter, the surgeon said it took about an hour to implant the bar, do the Lefort I (the horizontal fracture that you get all the stitches from along your top gum line) and the palatal split. It was done under general anaesthetic and, like John, I had an appointment with the anaesthes...

Re: SARPE Surgery

Yesterday was two weeks post surgery and that was the perfect amount of time to take off work for me. I'm working from home for the rest of this week and feel pretty much back to normal (apart from the Medieval teeth I've now got!). The thing that's stopping me going back into the office is having t...

Re: SARPE Surgery

So good to know I'm now on track. My fiancé turned it right up until yesterday, twice a day. But while he was out yesterday I sneakily tried turning it a couple of times more myself because I knew something wasn't right (it was all too easy) and that's when I noticed the difference, I got lots of pr...
