Re: Long face: open bite but no gummy smile
I am not particularly knowledgeable (and "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing" comes to mind) - I have listened to what professionals have told me, and used that as a basis for research to confirm what they have told me and asked questions. But that's with a fairly narrowly defined pr...

Re: Unhappy with surgery results, help?
I think you might have a tough time pursuing that conversation with many surgeons, let alone me :/ Remember there is an "acceptable range" of incisor display, so losing 1mm (for example) may be just fine. Similarly, your nose may get slightly wider and slightly more upturned, which again ...

Re: Unhappy with surgery results, help?
I do have fairly large teeth so I feel like veneers would look kind of awkward, plus from what I've read they're not permanent and they have to shave down the enamel on your natural teeth before you get them on (correct me if I'm wrong though) so I don't think I can commit to that. Surgery was bad ...

Re: Unhappy with surgery results, help?
I echo the sentiment of withholding judgement until the swelling is gone. Generally a surgeon would want to close an open bite by impacting the back of the maxilla more than the front, allowing the back to rotate up and the front to rotate down, closing the bite. In theory, coupled with the advancem...

Re: Long face: open bite but no gummy smile
One of the problems with second opinions is that you can see a number of different practioners and get the same number of opinions - often based on what they learned way back when rather than what is current practice. In my case I deliberately saw the surgeon and orthodontist independently and they...

Re: Long face: open bite but no gummy smile
I have a "severe" open bite and some gumminess of smile, although have been advised it is within normal range (especially after looking at close relations). Closure of the open bite by intruding molars has been recommended. The surgeon - who would make more money by performing an impactio...

Re: What kind of surgery should I get to shorten a long face
Cheeks and jaws are two entirely different structures, so unless you get a Lefort III the cheeks will be for the most part unaffected
Mandibular setback should shorten your face, as should impaction assuming you have a gummy smile or open bite

Long face: open bite but no gummy smile
Those of you who had surgery to correct an anterior open bite but did not have a gummy smile, did you notice your overall facial height got any shorter from the maxillary impaction and subsequent rotation upward of the mandible? Thanks

Re: Is jaw surgery worth it for me?
[quote="Anna5"]Hello! I think that is very hard to say..... Maybe you can consult an ortho and ask him how important this is to fix? What problems may you experience if you don't fix it? How do you feel about it yourself? Are you happy with the way you look or are you very selfconscious ab...

Re: Kind of concerned about the state of my teeth and jaw
Thanks for the response guys, I have an ortho appointment in about a month. Going overseas is really out of the question anyways, so I'm banking on the insurance. Anyways, as I do more research I think I've narrowed it down that I actually have Long Face Syndrome. A couple points: 1. I have the long...

Re: Kind of concerned about the state of my teeth and jaw
[quote="CaliforniaKid"]braces cannot realign your jaw, you realize that right? you live in the US or canada/europe? orthognathic surgery can normalize your jawbone and strengthen your chin, but that can cost anywhere from 15k-100k depending on your location and surgeon. the younger you are...

Re: Kind of concerned about the state of my teeth and jaw
After doing some more research, I'm placing my money on it being retrognathia.
