I'm not going to a dental hospital, but am being treated in the orthodontic department of my local hospital, and so far the care has been great. I personally wouldn't worry a bit about it not being private. The waiting times might be a bit longer but the care will be up to standard.

just been for an adjustment today, and got another 4 molar bands (had 4 already). Now my teeth don't seem to fit together at all, so chewing is almost impossible. And everything is sore because of adjustment

It's going very well so far, i'm completely used to them now. It has been painful and uncomfortable, mainly the first few days, then just a few teeth at the time, but pain has meant movement and it's not that bad really. I have had a lot of movement already.
