Re: working with the insurance company
Just stumbled on this thread and wanted to comment on the Costa Rica option. It is a good option worth considering if money is a factor. There is one surgeon there who is good and he trained under Dr Wolford. He's not the most experienced in the world but he's done enough to know what he's doing. I ...

Re: What can I do to avoid extractions in my daughter?
I have all my molars so hard for me to imagine it would be like with only 1 set. What are the odds of sleep apnea without molars? Of course, leaving teeth in doesn't change that but they should be correlated and if you're going to need surgery anyway to fix that problem (which I suspect will be a lo...

What can I do to avoid extractions in my daughter?
My daughter is 5 years old. She had sleep apnea for some time, recently treated with tonsil extraction. She now has an anterior open bite and has ground down her baby molars. Her maxilla is slightly underdeveloped and her incisors fully overlap (I share both bite problems btw). She lacks expected sp...

Experiences with double jaw MMA for sleep apnea?
Anyone else here have it? What was the experience like and are you happy with the results and aesthetic changes? Would love to speak to someone if possible.

Re: Anyone use Dr Federico Alfaro
You are right , 2.8cm. He offers a virtual consultation so if it's not too expensive I'll start there and report back. Maybe I can get some names of Americans who've used him to speak to. As for diet, yeah I wouldn't touch most of those foods these days. There's bone broth soup. I guess I'll need t...

Re: Anyone use Dr Federico Alfaro
The length of the incision matters because greater incision means greater likelihood of nerve problems, not to mention risk of devitalization (there's a poor girl on realself right now dealing with that). Bruised nerves heal better than cut ones. Dr Alfaro's incision is 2.8mm vs molar to molar. I ca...

Re: Anyone use Dr Federico Alfaro
Oh they don't do a molar to molar cut anymore, like on this youtube video ? That's a great relief!! Dr Alfaro's surgery didn't look all that bloody. That video I linked to looked really, really bloody. So this is where the term "bad split" comes from? How often does that happen? I guess th...

Re: Anyone use Dr Federico Alfaro
Ok I dug in a little more. I don't think he does outpatient for double jaw surgery and the sutures were for a SARPE. I found this video on Youtube of his surgery. The lower jaw looks standard but the upper jaw looks far less invasive, no? I can see he uses titanium plates and screws now. There's a p...

Anyone use Dr Federico Alfaro
I wouldn't normally consider going outside the US for a big surgery like this but Europe has good doctors too. One name that comes up is Dr Federico Alfaro. I see his name pop up a few times here but I can't find any jaw surgery blogs specifically for him. What do you all know about him? His website...

Re: Removal of jaw surgery plates
How is it possible to have double jaw surgery but only have plates on one jaw? I wonder if removing the plates might have been easier had it been done in the first year. My surgeon offered to use biodegradable plates and screws but they're contraindicated for the mandible by themselves. I was thinki...

Re: Open Bite treatment- Just Braces v. Surgery
Strange comment for BSSO. I would double check that with another ortho or an oral surgeon. My surgeon's concern was that TADs are new and there isn't much data on long term stability. Opinions have been mixed from people I've seen. Typically after braces you need a retainer for life to keep your tee...

Re: Questions regarding plates and screws
I'm told I may need a gum graft in two spots anyway. I'm pretty sure it's from braces 20 years ago but it hasn't been a problem yet. Maybe I could schedule them together then. My poor mouth is gonna have a rough few years

Re: Questions regarding plates and screws
They use resorbable fixation for pediatric orthognathic surgery as well, just not for adults. It looks like the main reason is that they're not perceived to be strong enough. The manufacturers all say that they're not indicated for the mandible alone. I don't know why they don't use them for upper j...
