The first few weeks with braces are the worst when it comes to comfort. It took me 3 or 4 weeks before my cheeks and lips toughened up enough where I wasn't getting any cuts or abrasions. Even now when the orthodontist changes brackets positions I end up having cuts all over again. I can't speak to ...

I know it seems like those bands are really stuck on there. I thought they were on my molars as well. I had eight bands on all of my rear two molars as this is necessary for surgical patients such as myself. After surgery, the bands were removed so that the Orthodontist could put brackets on the mol...

underbites
I would check with your orthodontist and surgeon to see whether you will have your lower jaw set back, your upper jaw moved forward or both. I had an underbite and had surgery three months ago. I thought for years that my lower jaw would have to be moved back but I was completely wrong. It was my up...

cleats
I too have the cleats on my upper molars. My tongue got caught on them when I first got braces on. It was also really hard to eat as I tried to move my tongue to move my food around to eat and my tongue would get caught on them then. Eventually, my tongue got used to them. Now and then the cleat hoo...

surgery date
Good luck with the surgery, Lillers. I still have a while to go before I get a surgery date (like sometime next Millennium). You'll be surprised how fast the time will go, I'm sure. I can't believe I've had braces for 14 months already myself. There is a bright side to a December surgery date. Just ...

SARPE
A great friend of mine had a SARPE a year ago and will be undergoing Orthognathic Surgery in the new year. I know how much she hated the Expander (or Ekthpander, as she called it) and the pain that it was. Including the gap, how the expander would chew up her tongue, the food that would get caught o...

Length until surgery
I'm sure the two upper bi-cuspid extractions had an effect on the length of time it takes to get my teeth right. Closing those gaps obviously took time away from straightening everything else out. Then, add to the fact that my OD is a perfectionist can't help. Although, that could be a good thing. C...

Karen, thanks for the encouragement. It's great to see you're still around. My apologies if I offended or upset anyone by advertising a new forum. I am not trying to compete or replace this forum at all. That would be impossible with the popularity of this great site and why would I want to? My goal...

Longest time from braces on to surgery?
I'm curious. I'm fourteen months into my treatment with braces and I still don't have a surgery date yet. I'd like to know what is the longest time people were in braces before surgery?

New support forum
I'm into my fifteenth month in braces and thought it was time to use some of my skills to create a new support forum for people with braces and those undergoing orthognathic surgery, like myself. With the new technology available on the web I was able to create a Web 2.0 forum for everyone like us. ...

Recovery
I'm planning on taking 3 weeks off work whenever my surgery comes around. From what I've heard, it's getting enough food into you for energy that will slow you down at that point. As so many people have said on here "Everyone's different.", and as much as I hate to say it, they're right. Y...

Extractions and stuff
I too have an underbite and my teeth were fairly straight before hand. Although, I had extractons last July before getting braces put on in August because room was needed on my top jaw. Both of those were first bicuspids (pre-molars). Having those extractions does lengthen the time before surgery be...

cut finger
I've cut my thumb in my mouth before while flossing. I pulled my thumb out too quickly and got the corner of the bracket on one of my bands. Slice! Not too much fun.
