Re: Week 1 post-op & I'm eating mash. Can I do harm?Burning

Harmony, I also had BSSO done. I was supposedly on liquid /no chew for 3 weeks, but did begin having some mashed food after about the 1-week mark when my mouth could open wide enough to fit a fork (just using my tongue to mash it then swallow). I think as long as you're careful about not chewing and...

Re: Don't want to do surgery...will braces suffice?

I remember seeing some posts from surgery patients in their 50s on http://www.jawsurgeryblog.com/forums/ It may be helpful for you to look at their experiences. I remember my doctor saying the recovery time increases as you get older. That may include nerve recovery as well, i.e. possibly higher cha...

Re: How much weight lost??

I lost 8 lb out of about 123 lb for being on liquids/no-chew for 3 weeks. You can try to pack in more protein powder in your drinks and add some ice cream. I definitely gained everything back though, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Re: Insurance/pre-approval

Certain Kaiser and BCBS plans also cover orthognathic surgery, although every plan is different depending on what your employer decides to include, etc. It sounds like your surgery is more likely to be qualified as medically necessary because of the accident? However, I don't think you can submit a ...

Re: Family members that put a "downer" on your treatment?!

Unsupportive family? Sure! S.O., dad, mom, grandparents, bff, relative(s), you name it! To be honest, I put off surgery for a few years because I felt like no one around me was supportive about it. In the end, I realize it's MY decision and I don't need everyone's approval. I did have a long discuss...

Re: Two options on Lower Jaw (BSSO) (Cuts v's Plates)

I'm terrible with medical terms, but I think the vertical cut you're referring to is called IVRO, which has been the "traditional" surgical method, while the horizontal is BSSO. Most surgeons tend to do BSSO now because the patient doesn't have to be wired shut for 6 weeks. My surgeon pres...

Re: Oral surgeon consult - and insurance question.

One week sounds soooo short! I had lower jaw surgery only (BSSO) and I felt relatively o-k and started doing a few hours of work after 1 week, but was still really puffy and wasn't well enough to return to work full time yet. I went back to work after 2 weeks -- same with two other folks I know pers...

Re: Negative comment about my results :(

I think your results look great! I think it's a success as well and I like what you're referring to as the "softer" profile. I don't see how this commenter can make assumptions that something had gone wrong etc. without actually looking at your x-ray and models --- I'm sure a real medical ...

Re: Insurance coverage for Orthognathic Surgery

Sorry to hear that =(. It's a lot of money for sure. Looks like your hospital/facility fee is lower than the typical insurance contract rate tho so it seems pretty reasonable... medical costs are just so terribly high in the U.S.

Re: Insurance coverage for Orthognathic Surgery

I hear that many large hospitals provide a discount to patients who are paying completely out of pocket - i.e. the specific hospital I talked to is around 30% discount, I believe, for expensive inpatient procedures like this.

I did use ice pak - as everyone says, ice really helps with the swelling for the first 2 weeks!

Re: Well I had it done. Now on day three.

Your post reminds me of how swollen I was at day 3. By day 4 - 5 you should start to notice a decrease in swelling. I know it's hard to imagine, but it does go away! Hang in there.

Re: Poll: How tightly were you banded shut?

lower only, banded lightly, no splint. My surgeon mentioned I had thick jaw bones so my nerves were not too impacted. I had enough sensation to drink from a cup/bowl right after I woke up in the hospital. I was able to fit a small fork after the first week.

Does that help with the whole not being able to brush thing? Bad breath is one of my major pet peeves and I'm kinda worried about it haha.

Peridex helps a little with breath - but most importantly it helps kill germs in your mouth, which prevents infection!
