It also just depends on your ortho. Mine uses permanent top and bottom, as well as clear retainers at night.

I would keep them on until your ortho says you're finished. You've been in them for 16 months already and have probably spent plenty of money on them, so I would stick it out and finish treatment.

It's definitely possible to have your braces removed and then put back on. You'll need to ask your ortho whether or not he/she will do it. I believe most will if you ask, but some will charge you for it and some won't.

Why do you think they'll say they can't do anything? Braces move the entire tooth - root and all.

My ortho uses permanent retainers that are glued to each tooth instead of the bar that's just glued to the canines. I brush and use Listerine morning and night and I do my flossing at night. A vigorous swishing after meals generally clears everything up. If I have something still stuck in the brackets after the swishing, I'll whip out the little tree brush, which does the trick.
