Re: Anyone been told they could get upper OR lower jaw surge
My lower jaw was moved 11 mm (BSSO advancement) but the difference in my appearance is very small. I looked pretty before the surgery and didn't had any functional issues or pain. After the surgery I have had pretty serious problems with function and pain. My surgeon didn't consider the risk v. bene...

Re: Face pain? They said it was the nerve?
Great to hear you are doing better! I also found the UK website very informative. I recommend also to check out this book "Trigeminal nerve injuries" Miloro, Michael (Ed.) if you are in the USA. http://www.springer.com/medicine/surgery/book/978-3-642-35538-7 You can read two pages of each ...

Re: Face pain? They said it was the nerve?
You have unhealthy / neuropathic pain probably. 70 % of patients with altered sensation feel pain. Most of people have combination of numbness (anesthesia), altered sensation (paresthesia) and pain. I would suggest that you seek the expertise of Dr. Tara Renton in the UK. She is faculty at the King'...

Re: Surgery or no surgery
If you do not sonar or don't have any breathing problems then moving your lower jaw forward may cause you breathing problems. Because moving jaw forward over 9 mm causes permanent change in your throat. In USA this operation is used to treat sleep apnea and only movement over 9 mm gives permanent po...

Re: The 3 week wait !!
I didn't knew that ceramic ones are bulkier until after the treatment. I had ceramic ones bonded on upper arch first and metal ones on lower arch months later. Metal ones just looked little bit smaller and if there was some food between the ceramic braces then I could see it better :) I didn't notic...

Where to find competent doctors?
I wore braces for 2.5 years and had orthognatic surgery. I had no complaints before the surgery and orthodontics but after all this I have pain in TMJ and it’s dynamics is restricted, have pain in chin area, have only one contact between arches, can’t chaw or bite normally. I’m not happy with the re...

Suggest doctors for second opinion
Please suggest a orthodontist and surgeon in London UK who would give independent opinion on previous treatment. My orthodontist and surgeon say the treatment is done but I have only one contact between my arches, I can’t bite or chaw, jaw is cracking and hurts etc. I had more contacts between my te...

Re: How long after surgery did braces come off?
I had BSSO surgery with advancement over 1 cm. My orthodontist estimated 6-month long period for braces after surgery but it was 1 year after the surgery before the braces came off! After the braces I had to wear buttons for elastics and even two years after the surgery my occlusion is far from norm...

Re: Older patients and numbness: what has been your experien
I was about 30 when I had BSSO advancement and my nerve recovered with painful neuropathy. The pain is quite bad and sometimes I would exchange it happily for a numb chin. Did you know that pain is more likely to occur than numbness after this surgery and 70% of patients feel all three possible feel...

Re: Splints
There is a risk of more complications if the splint does not fit properly. Not all the risk are surgical. There are non-surgical risk factors too. My splint had also some problem and my orthodontist took just new impressions. If the splint does not fit properly then you may need some extra orthodont...
