I feel your pain! I had a TPA for just over a year and the damage it did to my tongue... wow! I have had it off since November last year, and I still have grooves/cuts in my tongue. There was a period where I could hardly talk, eat or open my mouth due to the bar ripping into the flesh of my tongue....

I normally go for weet-bix and banana!

I normally go every 4 weeks. Although due to scheduling conflicts, I just had to wait 6 weeks, and it was torture!

I also have a Transpalatal bar and I have never had any concerns with it hitting or annoying the root of mouth (but don't get me started on the amount of food that is forever getting stuck up in there... yeek!!). It did however cut my tongue up pretty bad to the point that I didn't even want to talk...
