I had them both put on at the same time. My top teeth hurt a lot more than the bottom, but my upper teeth needed much more work than my bottom half. I think it really depends on what is being moved around!

I've had spring coils as well, but mine never protruded that far out. I would recommend talking to your orthodontist and he may be able to change to a shorter spring, or even use some steel ligatures to tie them down to your brackets! Which mine did.
