JN_Woods: I've lost weight too, not that I need to. I weighed in at 140 and now am down to 130 after about a month. I'm 5' 6", so that's kind of significant. I hope I don't continue to lose more. There's such a thing as too much. Braces are a good weight loss tool if you have any weight to lose!

Granola: That's quite a story! It's surprising that those kind of people make it into the medical profession, isn't it? What an experience! It's a good thing you did report that guy. He really was over the top! I guess the assistant I had wasn't quite that bad. It's just that when I told her the las...

2nd set of molar bands installed yesterday

As promised, here's my update: Admittedly, it went alot smoother than expected. I now have 8 molar bands. The ones they put on yesterday aren't even connected to anything yet and won't be for 2 months, but they are really scraping up the back of my tongue! I asked the assistant to smooth out the rou...

Ok, I'll try to be calm. But the horror stories I've been hearing.... And it just makes me a little upset also that my ortho told me that all I would need is spacers, then molar bands, then braces followed by adjustments every 2 months. I figured I could live with that. Now that the braces are on, i...

Nahky: My molar bands went in rather easily when the first ones were put on. I thought I had evaded the pain everyone else said it would be. It's depressing to think about how bad it will be when they put these other ones in. You said "the banding was pure torture". I can imagine that it w...

Well, I tried it last night and it didn't work for me. I just can't get into my mouth far enough to get the right angle. I thought I got ahold of the wire once and then I clamped down as hard as I could, but it didn't cut.

Sydsmom: Really? You can use nail clippers to cut the wire? I'm glad to hear that because my wires are starting to poke through less than a week after being installed. It's like a pin poking my cheek! I've putting wax on it, but it keeps coming off. My next appt. is Wednesday, but I don't want to wa...

Nahky: Gee, thanks Nahky! Now I really can't wait until my next appointment! I already can't eat because of the pain and misaligned teeth and brackets. I've already come to the conclusion that this is not worth it. I mean, having straight teeth is nice, but not necessary. Being able to eat fo...

Dr. j, I assume you were answering my post. I'll let him put on a second set of 4 molar bands in addition to the present 4, but I have a feeling these are really going to hurt going on. There's just no room for them that I can see and I'm afraid they are going to require alot of force, and that mean...

Why a second set of molar bands?

Dear Orthodontist: I went through the unpleasant experience of getting my molar bands and putting up with the adaptation period of having them, and then needing to have the sharp edges ground off so I could eat solid food again without biting on my cheek with every chew. I was glad to get that over ...

I have numbness in my bottom front teeth too. I was wondering about it for awhile. I was braced just 2 days ago. I'll also call my ortho to see what he thinks.

I've been drooling at night because with my new braces, it's hard to close my mouth to keep it in, and if I put my teeth together, a tooth on top hits and hurts a tooth bracket below. It's hard to compromise!

Karen:

I got most of that white gunk cleaned off. There is still alot of the more permanent stuff around the brackets. It looks like plaque, which makes it look like I didn't brush well enough, which is not confidence inspiring for someone just getting started with brushing around braces.

You bet I can relate! And when the tooth that hits a bracket is also sore from being moved, it hurts even more. In my case, my lip even gets caught between the tooth and bracket, adding to the misery. Everyone says things will change, and if it doesn't, I hope the ortho can makethat change! :x

Thanks Lin, I was wondering what that stuff was. My mouth doesn't taste like superglue, but bubblegum. They put something else on my teeth that they said would taste like that. I think they said it was flouride. I've heard people get used to the feeling of braces in their mouth. But is it ALWAYS tru...
